I think people choose MDX because it is cheaper. However, I feel MDX is less attractive than previous generation in terms of the price. The sh-awd tech trim used to cost around 40k only OTD, which is a lot cheaper compared to a basic version X5... But now you need to pay 60K+ (for convincing yourself you are driving a lux sport SUV).
Do you agree?
no, you are wrong...
One thing is:
it has been more than 20 years since MDX was born that MDX was the number 1 in luxury 3-row sub-division market
how you say MDX not a luxury car ?? or do you think the babysitter RX350L as luxury car ?

it is ridiculous that somebody judge a car luxury or not, just count how many leather patch on the dashboard, funny right ?

Since 2022 MDX and later, MDX interior or external features are much better than before, are comparable to all the other so called luxury car, and further MDX SH-AWD, the king of SUV off-road system beat X5, GLE, RX to the hell, SH-AWD is even superior to Audio quattro torsen system.

The MDX is not in the same class as the X5, GLE or the Q-series. It's more comparable to the Genesis GV80.
The only car that was nicer inside than the mdx type s imo was the Lincoln aviator. I cross shopped all cars.

Q7 is a bastard child of audi and they don't give a damn about that car. I say this as an audi fanboy.

Have you cross shopped other 3-row suv's from mainstream/premium/luxury segments recently? Not on paper, but gone to actual dealers to see real numbers?

We test drove 22 3-row suv's from practically everyone back in May (no exaggeration). To get a mid-range trim on any of them, you were looking at minimum $50k+. Sure you can save on the mdx a bit as compared to the 3 germans, but they are all priced similiarly right now when dealer markups are factored in. Heck, even the palisade was $55k with ADM. Crazy!

2022 Luxury 3-row sub-division market ranking is: MDX, Q7, GLE450, X7, Lincon navigator, Land rover, GV80
I genuinely appreciate your passion and your rooting for the MDX. Ranking the SUVs is a very subjective topic and it is hard to be objective. I am biased toward the MDX and X5/X7 and will most likely buy the MDX as the comparably equipped X5/X7 is outside my budget based on a 5-year total cost of ownership. BMW dealers have started to discount the X5 again as the inventory is building up. There is a possibility once the MDX supplies build-up, we may see some discounting but it is hard to predict.

I refuse to pay ADM on the Tellurides and Palisades. They're good cars at MSRP or below. Definitely not worth a cent above MSRP.

To an extent. I personally feel MDX is more of a direct competitor with the Volvo XC90, Lincoln Aviator, Cadillac XT6, and Infiniti QX60. But the MDX gets cross-shopped a lot with cross-town rival Lexus RX350, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80, and BMW X5.

I looked at a Genesis and wasn't impressed. But since looking at this post I'm going to a Lincoln dealer...LOL.

MDX jack of all trades, master of none. Want more performance, go X5. Want cheaper price go Kia/Hyundai. Want a larger 3rd row, go domestic. Want more luxury, go Mercedes. Want decent value, adequate performance, decent 3rd room and access, and some luxury features, and cheap maintenance go MDX.
That's an interesting observation. I'm looking to replace my Acura MDX after the insurance company totaled it. I just bought a Hyundai for my kid. There were so many I was able to actually bargain. I have to say that KIA and Hyundai vehicles have a lot to offer, especially from a warranty perspective. Domestic I never really considered before but am now. What's funny to me is that two things are getting me on the Acura is that other competitors offer a true back seat captain's chairs but the biggest one is the touchscreen. I hate Acura's new infotainment system.

Long time lurker and former owner (lease) of a 2018 MDX SHAWD. I sold the lease mid last year when the market was hot and Honda/Acura let me sell the lease to a non Honda/Acura dealer. We have since been a one car household (2019 Toyota Camry), as only the wife needs to commute a short distance while I work from home. When I had the MDX, kids were little (preschool) and are now growing and the Camry is bursting at its seams when I take them for activities or long road trips. Plus I miss the ride height and ease of ingress and egress.
All being said, I am back in the market for an SUV and the prices are high compared to the deal I got in 2018. Here is my short list. Mercedes is bad luck for me and I do not like the Volvo. RX350 is expected to cost more and is basically a fancy Highlander. Like the fact Acura better separated the MDX from the Pilot. Even though the new Pilot will share the architecture, I do not expect it to get the same double wishbone setup or an advanced version of the TVD.
1. BMW X5 xdrive40i ($65-$70k)
Pros -quick, excellent ride and handling, that B58 inline 6 will even leave the Type S gasping for air and is proving to be reasonably reliable. Best base powertrain so far.
Cons - Expensive when comparably equipped, 5 seater, maintenance costs are very high, lower residuals
2. Audi Q7 3.0T ($70k)
Pros - 7 seater, nice V6, great ride, nice gearbox
Cons - Expensive, so so reliability, horrendous touch screen for all controls and gloss black, poor residual value, and high maintenance costs, handling is ok, looks like a station wagon
3. Genesis GV80 2.5/3.5T ($60-$70k)
Pros - Looks like a Bentley to the untrained eye, perceived reliability
Cons - Expensive, horrible markups and dealers are basically a Hyundai showroom in disguise, gearbox needs some refinement - slow to shift, feels very floaty/boaty
4. Acura MDX SH-AWD (not Type S) ($50-$55k)
Pros - Handles much better than the 2018 I had (I guess stiffer chassis and the double wishbone suspension), NA V6 that is a workhorse, 7 seats, well equipped (even base) and above all the cheapest of the bunch, and looks nice.
Cons - Wish Acura extracted more HP from the base J35 engine. Gloss black and no touch screen. All minor and I don't mind.

Y'all have a blessed day.

WRXDEV (yes, I did have a Subaru WRX during my 20s/bachelor days)
We have a 2021 BMW X5 xdrive40i and recently traded our 2021 Passport for a 2022 MDX Advance (certifified 8600 miles). The comfort of the MDX is a huge plus, the third row seat and versatility of second row is such a great feature. Love that and so much more about the MDX….but…. The gas mileage is flat out awful. I can’t believe this is 2022 and Honda/Acura can’t get me 20 mpg all miles. Highway is 21, city is 17~18. The X5 all miles we don’t reset the mpg runs 26.8 all miles. The X5 is flawless. It is comfortable, feels lighter~peppier, interior is beautiful. The MDX design inside~out is right up there with the X5. It falls short in performance. The X5 is everything one wants in a luxury SUV minus the third row.

As the owner of a 2020 MDX Advance and a 2020 Q7 Prestige, the quoted assessment is, IMHO, absolutely spot on. The MDX is our grocery getter and Labrador Retriever hauler. The Q is our fun to drive option. Its driveability, performance, technology content and luxury interior and capabilities are superior to our Advance. But then, we realized all of the above when we bought each vehicle. As they say, “horses for courses”. YMMV.

If not in a hurry lexus will be introducing all new model 3 row TX sometime this year or next. That's another option.

If I was in the market I'd be waiting for that to see how it compares. I like the Gv80 but not that u need to spend over 70k to get the 3rd row, and it is less roomy than even 3rd gen mdx. BMW leaves a lot to be desired with reliability, are insanely expensive, and have gone down the path of forcing you to pay a subscription just to have access to certain functions like heated seats. The XC90 is terrible for reliability. Same with Cadillac Xt6 and Lincoln Aviator.

All have their pros and cons and for me there isn't a perfect option. Especially when you look at gas mileage, the 3rd Gen mdx was awesome but nearly every other 3 row including 4th Gen mdx isn't particularly great.

Telluride doesn't have auto dimming side mirrors. Honestly I'd be looking seriously at the palisade if I were in the market right now probably.

so i was on the same boat as you. I had wrx and family was growing. I needed a suv with more room in back and for the kids.Did my researched and ended up with mdx. ive enjoy the car so far with no intention or regret. Hope you find your suv.

Love my MDX - I think they advance is good bang for your buck. Yes a X5 has better driving dynamics but I couldn’t be happier. That being said I am concerned about AC performance and will be bringing it in again when things heat up.

We are in the same boat. If you don't need a third row the options become so many more.

Knowing Lexus it'll be too little too late. Toyota will somehow find a way to screw it up.

Other than the reliability issues BMWs are such fine driving machines though.

Friend had a 2016 XC90. Other than the initial issue with his electronics he had trouble free miles until it got wrecked last month.
