Having the original Nav disc in my 05, I too am considering the 2010 upgrade. As has been mentioned, you also get a software upgrade disc. What is included in the software upgrade? I assume one thing is updating the change in the dates for daylight savings time, but any ideas on what else is included?

There is no separate software upgrade disc. All accumulated firmware changes, new features, and map/POI changes are updated and distributed via the yearly navi update disc. One disc does it all.

Besides the daylight saving time change, I'm not sure what the other frimware changes have happened throughout the years. If you call 1-888-549-3798, they might have a list.

From the website of what is included in the box:

"2010 White DVD Map Update for 2005 RL and MDX v4.81

This package contains two DVDs; one DVD software update and one white DVD disc with map coverage for the 48 Contiguous United States, Hawaii and the Canadian border region."

Just as an fyi, I called the Alpine folks and found out that the software update is solely related to the DVD. It is an update of the DVD software so that the new disc can be read. However, I was told that neither the look nor functionality of the navigation screen changes.

That would be basically correct. I upgraded to v4.73A from what ever my ’06 shipped with, and can’t say I noticed anything different... but then I’m only a casual Nav user.

The 2008 v4.64 had a few minor changes:

• One way streets (indicated with arrows
on the 1/20 mile scale - turn on in Icon
Options - "Other icons")
• Loss of male voice prompts (voice
prompts revert to female - regardless of
previous setup setting)
• Additional brand icons for restaurants,
motels and other POIs
• Updated maps and POIs

But the 2005 v4.13 had quite a few:

• Voice system enhanced to allow entry of
City, and Street. Allows entire address to
be entered by voice command.
• Route Guidance prompts includes street
name in guidance phrases.
• Avoid areas, and waypoint functions
added.
• For Odyssey, Ridgeline, RL, MDX The
2004 Zagat Survey ratings are available
for select restaurants.
• Navigation system utilizes Hands Free
Link (cell phone) to call POIs, and
personal address phone numbers.
• For RL Acura-Link Real-time-traffic c added
and displayed on navigation maps.
• For RL, MDX, Odyssey Navigation control
of XM audio.
• For RL Navigation system can control CDMP3
player, plays MP3 audio files.
• For MDX, Odyssey Navigation control of
Rear Entertainment system.

What version do you currently have?

Since I bought the 05 used in Oct 2006, I am sure it is whatever came in the vehicle in 2005.

From a practical/function standpoint I don't need a newer version, but when I saw there was a separate software disc, I wrongly assumed vehicle software was updated not just DVD. Not sure what I will do. We have a portable GPS for other vehicles.

The two-disc sets that come for some models is because of a software patch that was required for vehicles with the white disc navi software trying to jump from v4.31c or earlier to v4.6X or newer. If you did the disc upgrades each year there is no need for the patch, or if you are already on a version greater than 4.31c.

It's a one-time patch that is applied before the updated navi DVD version is installed. The patch itself does NOT install any new features, but rather fixes some incompatibilities with new(er) features and older software.
