So I'm looking at buying a 2018 or 19 MDX, SH-AWD. Coming from german makes, but I also have a 2012 Odyssey and the 3.5L has been rock solid reliable so the MDX has a lot of appeal especially for the interior.

Part of the problem is, unless I buy a maroney label, the listed options on the used car sites is a crapshoot. So I'm looking for some easy things I can look for to differentiate trim levels, based on the limited photos that dealers provide.

This is what i'm working with so far, that are easy ways to differentiate models - can you comment on if this is correct, or incorrect, or if there's a gray area? The more I can learn during research, the better I'll do.

  • Photo of the keys - ENGINE HOLD button indicates car has either Technology or Advance package.
  • Rear Entertainment System - this is an easy one, if there's a screen for the rear, it has the Entertainment Pkg
  • Wood trim on the center console around the shifter buttons and cupholder - this indicates Advance package. If a car only has Tech package, then this trim is plastic.
Is this all correct so far? Thanks in advance for any help. Hope to join the community formally soon!

Based on my 2020 spec sheet, it is an Advance trim if it has 360 surround camera, heated steering wheel, heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats (there are other Advance features as well). If these features are not on the vehicle, but it has navigation, blind spot information, parking sensors, remote start, etc, then it is a Tech trim.

So here's some visual differences to key off of while cruising thru a lot - Enjoy!

  • Hybrid models - look for blue logo on front fenders, also 4th wheel pic in this list below
  • Base model - smaller wheels (first pic)

  • Tech model - larger "pinwheel" type wheels (second pic)

- Advance model - small camera under front "A" logo, fog lights in front lower corners of grill, larger/wider wheels (third pic for 2019-2020 models)

- Advance Model (pre-2019) - fourth pic

Here is a website for most Acura models: Auto-Brochures | Acura Car, CUV & SUV PDF Sales Brochure/Catalog/Flyer/Info CL ILX Integra Legend MDX NSX RDX RL RLX RSX TL TLX TSX Vigor ZDX

The things I look at to tell models apart at a quick glance (but not 100%) are:
  • LED fogs, the 17-20 Adv and 19-20 Aspec came with standard LED fogs (you could also add them to base/tech trim)
  • ASpec models, came out as 19-20 models and have a different lower bumper, lower rear bumper, standard LED fogs, gun metal 20X8.5 rims, and blacked out trim
  • roof rails (without crossbar). Advance came with silver roof rails standard and you had to add them to the base, tech, and Aspec.
  • 360 camera (sometimes easier to spot right below the large Acura front grill emblem). Only the Adv came with 360 cam.
  • Sport Hybrid: body colored painted lower bumper trim all around, hybrid emblem on either side of front fenders, and blue "SH" on sh-awd emblem on the rear hatch.
  • It can be hit or miss looking at rims because of upgrades and aftermarket
  • Zero changes with 19-20 MDXs at any trim level other than blue book prices.

I would narrow down what color combo you want, if you want 3.5L or Sport Hybrid, fwd or sh-awd, and tech features you would like to have to narrow down a smaller range to pick. I wouldn't settle on a base fwd MDX because it is a good deal when you really want a tech sh-awd. I wouldn't worry about accessories like all weather mats, tint, hitch+harness because you can add them later. Service records, mileage, and interior/exterior condition would be high on my list. I would also stick with +18 MDXs because of Carplay and updated 4G Acuralink module.

...good info guys. And the A-Spec (2019-2020) is easily recognizable by its unique wheels, monochrome paint job (including Apex Blue), unique bumpers, and blacked-out trim. The interior does not come with leather; it's either a black/grey or a black/red Alcantara interior.
