Hello,

I am about to purchase an Acura 2012 MDX with Advance Package. I tried looking at the EPA rating vs real owner's experience on fuel economy. Since members are real owner of the MDX, can you please tell me how many mile per gallon you all get in real life driving? Also, I know it require premium gas but does anybody ever put regular gas in and notice any problem?

Sorry for the newbie question but I never own the MDX and it will be one of the biggest purchase for me so far (beside a house :)).

Thanks,
PC

:headshake BAD idea. It is designed for premium gas, and when you use regular gas, the performance is reduced. And performance includes mileage; whatever you save in a lower cost per gallon, you'll lose in reducing your miles per gallon. If you buy the MDX, put premium gas in it. If the idea of using premium fuel bothers you, then you should buy a different vehicle, one that does not require premium.

I just got a 2012 base model. I'm getting about 19 mpg mixed 70/30 highway/city when I'm carefully watching how I drive. When I forget and/or am in traffic and weaving around, it drops to like 15 mpg or so. This is definitely not a fuel efficient car, although not really worse than any other car in this class.

I like the MDX because the handling was sportier than almost any other luxury crossover/SUV except for the X5 and Cayenne.

The mileage is the only thing that disappoints me about by 2011 Advance. I have had a 2001 & 2005 MDX and both averaged around 20 mpg in everyday driving and up to 24 mpg in strictly hwy driving. I have had my 2011 15 months and the average is around 16 mpg in everyday driving, and no more than 20-21 in strictly hwy driving. As to gas, I am using premium in the 2011 but used regular in the previous MDXs with no negative effects.

I also use premium on my new 2012, too new to tell real mileage, but I was up to 22-23 on the hwy driving at speeds up to 85. The most common number I see in the mid is 16+, but the car endures a lot of short trips and I live in an urban area.
I don't think that regular will kill the engine, if you really want to try it out do it, and if you hear a lot of knocking then go back to premium. But I'm with the rest of the people here, and recommend premium.
If three rows, better mileage and regular gas is what you want with the trusted Honda reliability, then Honda Pilot is your car

15mpg is the best I can do on premium gas in city driving. Does the premium gas make a difference, I don't know but I know another guy who has one and he uses regular and gets the same mpg as I do and he says he doesn't notice any difference. I was also told premium gas was recommended and not required. Who knows, you use what you feel the best using.

Thank you all :). I haven't bought the MDX yet but I am thinking about buying very soon. 16MPG is not too bad for that big of an SUV as my 2010 V6 AWD Venza gets about 18MPG in city (except it uses regular gas). But I am sure it is much more fun driving the MDX vs my Venza.

I used to drive the Sienna minivan and love the high view (where you can see above all other cars except the SUV and big trucks), then I switched to the Venza and I can't see anything pass the first car in front of me so I am missing view so to speak, hence, I am thinking about the MDX.

Looking for MDX deal right now in the DC/VA area.

I thank you all for giving me real info from your personal MDX experience, I really appreciated.

Did you get the car from Radley Acura? That is where I would get mine when time comes. Which model and if you don't mind what the out the door price for you:D? I tried to gather as much info as I can before jumping into the water, so to speak, because this will be my most expensive car purchase ever.

I just bought my 2012 at the end of July (tech /entertain pkg)
I average 16.7 mpg for 60% highway and 40% city driving. I haven't strictly done city driving yet nor highway driving, so I can't get a good read on it yet. A/C is usually on but only 3 passengers. I use premium gas only. When on the highway, I'm ususally cruising at 75-80 mph.

Funny, I want to drive slower, but I just can't...MDX just wants to go go go.

Hi,

I have a base 2012 that I got in February. I keep meticulous mpg records. I calculate mpg based on gas filled vs miles driven. I live in NY. When I did mainly highway driving (70/30) I got around 18.5 mpg. Now its reversed and I do mainly local and I get 16.5-17.5. I rarely use my a/c and prefer the windows open.

I only use premium. Like other posters noted, the benefit in extra mpg by using premium usually outweighs the cost. Even if not, the added cost per tank is usually $2-3 dollars. I fill up three times/month and Ill gladly spend an extra $9 to give my baby the cleanest burning and preferred gas :)

It sucks that a 2012 highly advanced vehicle gets as poor mpg as my old 1997 chevy blazer. It baffles me why Acura hasn't made a more efficient car. However, with gas having been so cheap for many years, efficiency wasnt a priority. I'm sure the next redesign will offer better mpg and probably a hybrid. But to mirror other peoples sentiment, if I wanted good mpg I'd have bought a prius :)

Proud owner of a 2012 base MDX!

The "luxury" brands typically emphasize performance more than economy. The Pilot is more efficient by a couple mpg on regular unleaded. I think given the performance and size/weight difference between a Blazer and an MDX, the fact the MDX gets similar mpg doesn't seem too bad.
