depends. If your car is not 100% level when park then you get a fault reading

make sure it 100% level and wait 5 minutes after the oil reaches operating temperature.

 

Is this too much oil?

Way too much if you measured it correctly.

 

No matter what, this would happen if I pour the entire 5qt jug in my MDX. It seems like not all five quarts are draining, more like 4.2qts. So that's what I put back to get it to line up with the upper mark.

 

Recheck on level surface. If still that high, you need to drain some. Looks like a quart over to me.

Dealer refilled 5-quarts by default for oil change regardless the model.
