You need a 2018 or later mdx if you want oem Android Auto functionality. Otherwise, you need to retrofit with third party components.

the big sell for me would be the ability to do GPS from my android but not sure if it'd be better to just upgrade it to a tech package...if that's even an option or worth the cost

 

Oh lord. You clearly don’t got deep pockets when you cheaped out and bought a base model of a 2016 MDX. Its going to cost a lot to retrofit a 2018+ headunit and screen to a 2016 MDX base. You are better off installing a GROM VLine VL2 system to the vehicle at this rate for cheap.

Did you not do enough research to figure out if you wanted Android Auto and Apple Carplay built into the vehicle?

Other than GROM, you can get a pretty much same thing at lower price from Aliexpress, i just installed mine last week, working as expected.

 

I’m curious on long term of the device. How is it compared to the GROM?

Hi MDXers. I have a 2016 SH-AWD with the premium sound system (it's not premium at all in my opinion). I would like to add android auto to the system. Does anyone here have any opinions on GROM vs the AliExpress options? Just trying to decide if the GROM is worth the extra money.

 

GROM user here. Its been flawless since I installed mine.

 

I'm using the Navifans module and it's been working great for me so far. You'll have to change the input to aux, and Apple CarPlay will load wirelessly via bluetooth. I haven't tried Android Auto, but I suspect it will be the same. You can toggle between the factory infotainment to the Navifans one by holding the menu button for 2 secs.
