The similarities between the cars are huge and it is hilarious to say "they share hardly any common parts" as if we are talking about a BMW vs a Subaru. Basically same engine, same AWD, same interior seating system with removable middle seat, on and on. But we've already agreed to disagree there

Exactly. While I get the Type S is bespoke Acura will enough differentiation, the non type S MDX and the Pilot are practically the same car, whether you like it or not. Pilot is a cheaper MDX or the MDX is a more expensive Pilot.

Since they share the same platform and they both have four wheels, speakers, leather seats, windows, etc then I guess they are the same car? The Camry and Lexus ES share the same platform, are they the same car? Why buy the ES when you can get a Camry since they share the same platform, both have four wheels, doors, etc.

I'll use the word "similar" instead of "same". Objectively speaking, the ES and the Camry are very similar cars. They're on the TNGA-K platform. They both have the same set of engines, gearboxes, and hybrid powertrains. What differentiates the ES is different sheet metal, more insulation, and more creature comforts.
Why buy the ES? Well, if you're a brand snob and place more value on the brand image, then yes. Personally, I won't buy the ES and just get the Camry. However, if you do want a Lexus, buy something that is more bespoke like the GS or IS.

For Acura, the RDX practically shares nothing with the CRV and I will make every effort to get that vs. the CRV. Similarly, the MDX Type S is a bespoke Acura that I greatly admire and would love to buy it.
TLDR - If you like the MDX, get the Type S, it is totally worth it. If not, just get the Pilot Touring/Elite.
