I have a 2010 mdx advance ent pkg.

when i turn the key to start the vehicle it sounds like its struggling to start and is quite loud and embarassing when in public places. i took it to the dealer and they said they couldnt make it repeat the sound. It does not do this all the time and it is not at any certain time. please help

The MDX has auto start where you just twist the ignition quickly and let go, the MDX will do the rest. If you try and start it like a regular car, you hold the key while you twist and you make the starter go while the engine is on. Makes a terrible sound.

Have you considered making a quick recording (with a mini-cassette recorder, digital recorder, your cellphone, something) every time you start the car? That way, if it doesn't happen, you can scrap the recording, and if it does, you have have something you can play for the dealer.

I just returned my leased 2007 and got a new 2011 less than a week ago.
My 2007 has always had that starter grind whenever the temperature dropped below around -5 celsius.
My brand new 2011 also does this as it's been about -25C here in the mornings.
It's basically the sound of the starter not retracting the pinion gear fast enough when the engine starts.
When I took my 2007 into the dealership, they said it was normal starting grind...
I think it's sad as car's i've owned costing 1/3 of what the MDX is have never had that issue.

I had a similar problem (starter failing to release) on my 03 MDX. It would make a screeching sound as the starter motor is overdriven by the engine. The starter can be repaired by lubing the idler shaft and holder. There's a long thread w/ pics of the repairs by another member.

good luck
