Hey Folks,

I'm about 2 years in on my 2016 MDX, currently at 30k miles, and trying to decide if I should opt into the extended warranty. I'm planning on keeping the vehicle to 100k mi, so it seems worth it for the piece of mind.

Asked dealer what the situation is and they said it would cost $2855 right now and price goes up at 36k mi. They also told me max coverage if I get it at the end of my factory period would be 4 years, not clear on what that even means.

Can anyone give me some advice here, this seems like I'm being fed BS, but not sure. Are folks still buying these warrantiees elsewhere, and what' the real deal on the pricing changing based on miles?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

I typically pass on the extended warranties. They wouldn't offer them if they didn't make money... Statistically you'll spend less on repairs than what the warranty costs. Of course, someone will have a story of how they had a catastrophic failure and the warranty ended up working for them... But that's rare compared to the number of people who pay $$$ and never use it.

You need to double-check if the extended warranty is Acura Care (accepted in all 50 states with Acura dealerships) or third party (may only be regional, local, and/or with that one dealership). The prices shouldn't change that much if you buy at time of purchase of your MDX back in 2016 or if you wait just under the 4yr/50k limit because Acura Care doesn't kick in until after the 4/50,000 mile basic, 6/70,000 mile powertrain, and after any factory extended warranties are expired first. That doesn't mean the dealership can't charge you more if you wait so they can make more money off of you. You might be paying $2800+tax for only 70K to 100k miles of coverage depending on the issue with your MDX after basic or powertrain warranties are expired.

The only state I know of that you have to buy Acura Care from a local Acura dealership is Florida. I live in NM and I purchased my 5 extra years or 120,000 miles Acura Care warranty from AZ for $2350 back in 2014 right at 3 yrs 11 months and 49,000 miles. Great thing about out of state on-line purchase is no sales tax (could save another $200-$300 compared to local purchase).

I only purchased the extended warranty on my 11 MDX Adv because of the ADS magnetic struts/shocks random failures ($1000 per corner to replace). I already had the fronts fail at 30K and replaced under the 4/50k basic warranty. Acura did provide an extended warranty on the ADS system up to 100,000 miles earlier this year. My $2400 Acura Care will only cover me for another 17,000 miles before it will expire and I only used it to replace both front seat heater pads (I have 103,000 miles now).

I have 3 Acura (06 TSX +140K, 08 RDX 145K, and 11 MDX 103K) and I haven't had $2800 worth of repairs between all 3 vehicles excluding regular M.I.D. maint, tires, battery, brakes, or wipers during my entire time of ownership starting back in 2006.
