Try hitting the unlock button at least two times with the lid open then close it and see if it will lock. Worked for me when I was having the same problem a year ago. Evidently someone hit the lock button with the tailgate open. Then when shut it would of course not lock but the mechanism also would remain in the lock position when unlock was hit.

Well, I took it to the dealership today and the technichians looked at it and it was their opinion that the locking mechanism in the tailgate is completely non-responsive. I made an appointment for Monday to have it replaced. They were all completely puzzled - a first for them in an '05.

I will keep you posted!

 

From other posts, I found that the rubber wiring tubes at the top of the hatch were pinching wires and found that it had fully broken a ground wire in the left rubber tube. I was able to repair that wire and added some electrical tape to protect the others and the hatch began to lock once again.

2003 MDX - Gold - with Everything

 

This must have happened a lot on the MDX since that same ground wire broke in my car too.

 

Just found two broken wires in mine and others on the verge of breaking. One was to my middle break light which I didn't know wasn't working until now.
