I noticed that a whistling noise coming some where from the back of the vehicle around the has tank. I am positive it is not coming from the engine compartment. I have noticed that this noise is present when I start the vehicle (does not have to be moving, so it is not wind noise I am talking about) and have noticed it going away after driving around for 20 minutes or so. But it usually comes back again after a cold start. I have noticed that other Acura/Honda cars had a fuel pump some where around the gas tank, which made a noise but not a whistling one (it is highfrequecy noise, like one those TV emergency response interruptions, but bit faint).

Any body had the same problem? Is it a problem? Is there any solution? My MDX has only 100 miles and I am peeved by this problem.

Based on your description, you're probably hearing the fuel pump whine. It's normal.

You shouldn't be able to hear it w/the windows up or when you're at speed. If you think it's louder than it should be, then by all means ask the dealer to have a listen.

I don't know about Honda, but in my Dodge Caravan, the fuel pump start to hiss/wistle when it is coming to the end of the life. The dealer said it got ot be replaced. As Worm suggested, have your dealer take a look/listen. Mine is not doing it at all, not a single sound.

I don't hear anything in mine either - it is only a month old. Sounds like you need to stop by your local dealer.

Uh oh. Hey '01 owners...do me a favor, next time you start 'er up in the morning (in the garage), roll down the driver's window and listen for it. Else I'm gonna have something to mention to the dealer. Ours has done it since the beginning. tdnone is right -- in some cases it could be indicative of fuel pump failure.

The hiss/whine was brought up some time ago...here's the link: http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=363&highlight=fuel+pump

Worm,

I know for sure that mine did not have any sound at all. My side of the garage is as tight, width wise, as that of Donsev, so I have to roll down the window all the time to watch and ensure that I am going out straight. Once backed out of the garage, I have to come down to push out both side mirrors so I did walk around the vehicle (the mirrors are folded in in order for the X to get into the garage). No sound at all. IMO, the pump should never have any sound at all.

Worm - same here - I have heard no noise, but I will double check tomorrow when I back out of the garage & turn off the radio & roll down the window to be sure.

You know...I simply must revise my former post. I do hear "whistling" around the gas tank....every time I fill it! But only if I stand out there long enough. ;)

Well, I tried to record the sound this AM but my little digital Olympus can't pick it up. It's subtle, and hard to hear over the engine and exhaust noise. It's also one of those noises that your ear has to be "pointed" in the right direction to hear it.

Nonetheless, to make sure we're all talkin' about the same thing, I've uploaded some sample test tones. The noise I'm hearing (no radio, garage, window down) is something like this, but significantly more muted and less perceptible than these sample tones. But one of these tones approximates the frequency of the noise. I think Tone 3 is the closest.

Tone 1
Tone 2
Tone 3

(These differ from DMor's, which I believe is this one).

Again, I believe this is normal for the fuel pump based on that other thread link I provided above. That said, I wasn't able to find similar discussion over on the Ody, CL or TL boards.

Now I think I understand why you have the Cheshire Cat Avatar - you're giving new meaning to "Fill'er up"!!;) ;)

Worm--

I've got the same sound, but it's not just when I start the car...and it's closer to sound 1. I've got to think it's normal...it resembles the whine of a jet engine, on a much smaller scale of course.

Is this what you're hearing?

Rob,

Yea, it's all the time; just more noticable in the garage with the sound reflecting off the walls and stuff. I think it's normal based on that other thread I referenced (syncivic's comment). I'm gonna try and listen to our old 98 Accord later this week; as I recall, last time this came up I did so and it made the same noise.

Sound 1 and 3 are the closest I think...

Did anyone ever get theirs fixed?

I had mine into the dealer yesterday and mentioned the same noise. Dealer said that it is indeed the fuel pump, and they had it next to another MDX and noticed the same thing.

Has anyone gotten theirs replaced or this problem fixed? Not a huge issue, just wondering.....

I reported this "potential" problem to the Acura service dept and got the same answer - "this is the normal sound of the fuel pump."
The noise is still there and it is getting louder. I am taking the car in for the 12000km service this week and I'll have them check again.
From what I observed, this seems to be a common problem, NOT "not a problem.":25:
