tire size

greetings dromayn!

There are a couple of choices out there for you. I personally have gone with a 295/40/20 Eagle HP Plus tire. The other sizes that guys on this site have used are either the 275/45/20 or the 265/50/20. It's all a matter of preference. From my experience the 265/50/20 is way too much side wall and causes rubbing. There are no problems with the 295/40/20's or 275/45/20's. If you go with the 295/40/20's go with the Pirelli Scorpion's!!!

Keep MDXin'!

Wheels and tires

Hello Dromayn
Theres several things you should consider.
1st)Wheel diameter.
If its larger than stock the ABS will not function properly without reprograming the computer and your acceleration performance will suffer.
2nd) Tires with very low aspect ratios telegraph every ripple and sharp bump on the road .This is a fact and not just an opinion. With a machine like the MDX which has rather high spring rates the harshness will be intensified. If you drive on perfectly smooth roads this would not be a problem. Just want to help you from being unhappy with a major purchase. Wheels and tires are very $$$ and knowledge is power.
My interested in taller wheels and wider tires was for the performance improvements first and the looks a close second. This is why I chose to go with 19x8 Moda R6 alloy wheels and 255/50x119 Pirelli Scorpion Zero Tires. The touring wheels and the Modas both have a +45mm offset and the tires have the same rolling diameter of 29". The Michelins on factory touring wheels have a 7" wide contact patch and the Moda/Pirelli Zeros have an 8 1/2" Patch. I absolutely love the performance and the bumps do not beat me to death. This combo from the tirerack.com cost $1,900 including shipping. I will use the stockers in the winter but now its time for fun.
Hope this will be of help to someone.
PS DubbedSSmdx Your X looks beautiful .

re: 19's

Harry thanks for the compliment on the X. You're right on with all the specifics you listed in regards to factors to note when upgrading your wheels. I'd love to see your X with 19's! Please post pics for us!

Keep MDXin' fellas!

Harry,

Could you post pics of your MDX w/the R6's. I have found those to be the closest in design to Lexus OEM rims (i.e. RX300) and thought they would look very nice on the MDX - but I am sure that the tirerack mock-up doesn't do them justice.

(edit: sorry for the second request, didn't see the earlier one)

MDX with Moda R6 19x8 alloy Wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires

Hello All
This is the only photo I have right now of my X since I mounted the new wheels. I cannot wipe the smile of my face. The handling improvement is that huge. I'd be more than happy to let any of my fellow MDXers test drive this beauty.

Sorry Guys
When I figure out how to post my jpeg I will upload it. I shure feel silly.

I can't tell if there was sarcasm in that comment - but yes, I really do like the look. Although, call me old fashioned (I think you just did ;) ) I think I would prefer them without the lowered springs. Are those 255/50 tires?

There was no sarcsm in my commentary. I can also appreciate the clean and simple approach as well. However, the red rock pic that i posted is from the tire rack site. I'm not sure what kind of additional mods they added if any. It could well be photoshop wizards at their best!

re: Pirelli Scorpion's

Hey Harry,

Out of curiousity. My friend uses 255/55/18 Pirelli Scorpions and the tires perform great in both wet and dry conditions. However, I guess due to the tread pattern the tires are a bit louder than normal. It's a sound that my friend and I don't mind but I've heard of some that complain about it. I'm looking to get the Pirelli Scorpions on another application I have in mind and would like to get your feedback on the the tires. BTW, your MDX looks great - I like the look you've accomplished! Be sure to post lots of pics for us all!!!

Keep MDXin' guys!

Hi DubbedSSmdx
The Scorpion Zeros on my X seem to be no louder than the stock michelins. My interest in these tires was for the great all around perfomance and the sound they make is music to my ears. My gas mileage on the highway has noticeably improved and the way this MDX eats up the twisties keeps a grin on my face. I thought it handled good with the stock tires but its waaaaay better now
Keep customizing. Harry

re: Handling

Harry,

you're right on with the handling comment... I couldn't believe how well it took the twist and turns after the wheel upgrade. Especially since I went with a 295 tire and a 8.5 wide wheel....

Harry, any special reason for the Modas vs. let's say the Mille Miglia Action wheels? I was checking things out on Tirerack.com and both of these were listed as options.

I am salivating over the prospect of doing this, but don't know if I want to shell out $1900 buckeroos, but I love what you and Dubbed have done.

octavian,

trust me! you will not regret spending the money on this mod for your car. I'm sure the other dubCLUB guys on this site and Harry will attest that their MDX handles ten times better and looks different than the growing number of MDX's out there! jus my two cents. Putting new wheels on is like driving your MDX for the first time; and we all know how that felt!!! Also, if you do your shopping i'm sure you can get a 19in setup for around 1500; which is an awesome price considering that Acura would probably charge 1500 or more for the stock wheels which are a boring 17inches!!!!

Dubbed.....you are making things verrrry difficult for me....you know, I thought the same thing about all the X's starting to pop up around here....I wanna be different.

Another question, do stores typically take the stock wheels back for some kind of credit? Or should I keep 'em (with the original tires) like Harry to switch back to in the winter months?

PS....glad you got your Zaino....been following the theads there...:D
