My changer still skips (and I'm waiting for the replacement) so I can't usually get through a disc without cursing at the changer. That said, I'm currently spinning:

1. Talking Heads: Sand in the Vaseline (retrospective compilation) Disc 1 (the early years).

2. Violent Femmes: Debacle (also a compilation)

3. Ken Burns Jazz Box (Disc 4/5: Miles, Getz, Brubeck, etc.)

4. U2: All that you can't leave behind

5. Santana: Supernatural

6. Radiohead: Kid A

2. Tuatara

3. Fear of Music - Talking Heads

4. Zappa

(say what you want about the Bose system, I was sitting in the car wash line one day listening to the marimba break in "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast" - it just doesn't get much better):D :D

5. Holst - the Planets

6. Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue

Well, you'll have smart kids! I confess to just evicting Backstreet Boys, it would be OK if they didn't want to listen to the same two songs over and over. Got them on a Warren Zevon kick now, might as well bring em up right.

For the little ones, you need to try the Baby Zappa CD - Raffi's ripped my flesh...

Hey Mesa, which Tull you listening to? I almost picked up Thick as a Brick a couple days ago, and figure it's time to introduce the boys to Aqualung.

Good choices, Mom, love that Buena Vista CD! My 4-yr old sings along with that first tune. If you ever get a chance, check out the video documentary by the same name, Ry Cooder put it together.

Sounds like you're off to a good start!

More Latin Flavor

Thanks MDX Mom,

You got me thinking about Buena Vista, so I'm now loaded up with latin. BTW, I picked up the video on Buena Vista and really enjoyed it.

1. Beuna Vista Social Club
2. Gypsey Kings - The Best Of
3. Cafe Cubana - a collection CD I picked up at Starbucks a couple of years ago - GREAT!
4. Putamayo presents CUBA
5. Cesario Evora - Cafe Atlantico
6. Gloria Estefan - Greatest Hits

I wish I could speak spanish, Cuban, and brazilian. Then I could understand what is being sung on CD's 2 through 5. I do love the music though. CD5 is excellent. Soulful ballads and really great sax work.

My MDX really cooks with salsa!

What other latin, particularly Cuban, music is recommended?

KOT!

If you really like salsa, Gilberto SantaRosa is really a must. Other good ones are Ruben Blades (the earlier albums), Juan Luis Guerra y los 4-40. For merengue, Olga Tanon is pretty good.Of course, Gipsy Kings (you already have it). Try the Mambo Kings album, it's also pretty good.

Wow, nice set! I'll have to check out the Putayamo release, that's a great label. Thanks for the tips on the others, I'll check 'em out..

I've got one more good Cuban release for you - this is an elemental release (read unproduced) that a good friend of mine gave me. I recorded this from CD to cassette - and to be honest - *I've never used the tape player in the MDX (after what, after 4 months now - I've been too blown away by having a CD player!) Guess I should check it out...*

Anyway, the band:

Marc Ribot and Los Cubanos Postizos

don't know the name of the CD or where you'll find it, maybe check out CDNow.

Oh yeah, one more - some of Los Lobos got together with Mitchell Froom under the name of Latin Playboys. It's not at all like typical Los Lobos - the tunes are mixed in with mix in street noises and samples. Very interesting, pretty dissonant, worth checking out. The name of the CD is "Dose".

And thanks for getting me into this Cuban/Latin vein, I'll have to load up a Latin set tomorrow...

PONCHO SANCHEZ ROCKS!
Be sure to get the CD with "Watermelon Man"
I really enjoy listening to it in my 'new' 1997 Honda Accord which MDX Mom used to drive.
