OK, I'm ready to put down a deposit. I live in the Bay Area, and from what I'm reading here the dealer situation is pretty bleak regarding finding an '02 (Mahogany + Touring + Nav) at MSRP within a few months. Can anyone suggest what dealer on the west coast would be good to work with? A dealer in San Diego claimed about a one month wait on that particular configuration (there was one other person on the waiting list for that combo), but the dealer didn't get good comments here...

Also, is there a problem buying a car outside California and bringing it in?

Thanks!

Here is what I found:

1. Hopkins Acura: MSRP. Wait is almost 10 months
2. Prestige Acura: MSRP. Long wait
3. Sunnyvale Acura: MSRP +2000 - 3 Months
4. Los Gatos Acura: MSRP +2000 - 3 Months
5. Stevens Creek Acura: MSRP + 1185 forced options, Wait about 2 months.
6. Acura of Concord: MSRP + 893 forced options: Wait is 3 months.
7. Acura of Pleasanton: MSRP + $4500 worth of options --- SURPRISE - No waits!
8. Butts Acura: MSRP - 6 Months wait.
9. Gold Coast Acura: MSRP - 4 Months
10. Acura 101 West: MSRP - 3 Months
11. Cerritos Acura: MSRP +238 accessories - Wait depends on what you need.
12. Acura of Pasadena: MSRP - Looks like they have some unclaimed now.
13. Valencia Acura: MSRP - Wait -unknown.
14. Mike Harvey Acura: MSRP + 2500 - Wait is None!
15. Solano Acura: MSRP +3K Accessories - No Wait.

This is what I gathered. I might not be accurate on some of them. Your wait might actually depend on the color. Good Luck!

I'd recommend Gold Coast Acura in Ventura. It was a 4 month wait but the dealer was a pleasure to work with. A neighbor was able to purchase a 2001 in 2 months.

Would you consider coming to Cincinnati and picking up your MDX - can get $500 discount from MSRP, no forced options, about 2 month wait and do everything over the phone? My dealer has been a pleasure to work with.

Forced options like running board, tailagte deflector is more useful than the useless paint protection, interior scotch guard. The later two is 80 or 90% gross margin, IMHO.

This is great information regarding pricing and wait time - thanks! I'd definitely be willing to fly almost anywhere to pick up the car, but what are the laws regarding bringing a car into California? My understanding is you can't bring a new car in from out-of-state, it has to be 90 days old or have 3000 miles (which might mean I have to drive from the east coast!)

OK, a bit of web surfing brought up the following information:

If you are a resident of California
and buy or acquire a new car, truck or
motorcycle in another state, it must be
"California Certified" to meet
California emission laws. To find out whether a car or truck
is California certified, check the
emission control label under the hood
in the engine compartment. If the
vehicle is "California certified," this
label will state that the vehicle conforms
to California regulations or that
it is legal for sale in California.

So, can someone outside of California check under their hood and see if the MDX is California certified?

And, does anyone know whether there are other considerations in buying a car out of state?

Up here in Oregon, they send the MSO to your local License agency in California that you do business with, it takes about two weeks. Then you go in and pay your taxes and Licensing fees.

I do have that MDX with a build date of 11/16, unfortunately our dealership is 2k over. But there may be other dealerships with about the same build date as they tend to paint in batches.

Cyclone,

The MDX is 50-state emissions legal. Just bring it in. You pay sales tax when you register it @ DMV.

[edit: I see Roger beat me to it...]

West Coast Dealer--Niello in Sacramento

Because of the excellent buying experience I had purchasing my MDX from Niello Acura in Sacramento, I would recommend them for anyone in the California area. We live in northern Nevada and the only Nevada Acura dealer is in Las Vegas---450 miles away. We did fly to Falconi's but were spooked away by the additional dealer markup and forced options.

In a nutshell IMHO the ONLY dealer to deal with is Niello---at MSRP and no forced options. As of yesterday when I got the 7500 service on my Mesa Beige Base/Navi at Niello they had a SS 2001 Base MDX FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY FOR ANYONE !!!!! The person who ordered this MDX backed out on the car when it arrived.

I agree that Niello charges only MSRP, no force option. If you do order options, they only ask for Acura website price. The wait line is reasonable.

That is a pretty good summary on dealers in the Bay Area. However, you still can bargain on over-priced options. If you are willing to wait for one to two months, then you should not have to pay for more than the standard price quoted on ACura website.

With the current economy, dealers know that they are getting less customers than 2001 and some cusomers are cancelling the order. Another factor is that, once Alabama plant is up in production, supply of MDX will go higher.

I just place a order with Los Gatos Acura. They no longer charge $2,000 premium; however, they still forced $2000 worth of options.

That's nice to see that Los Gatos Acura is no longer requiring the $2K over MSRP. Is this true for just 2001 models or good for the 2002s also?

Did you get a chance to find out what the forced options are?

Concord Acura

Cyclone,

Just saw 3 '01 MDX at concord Acura this afternoon (10/28/01). 2 Black(One Touring no Nav, the other Premium), 1 Granite Green (Premium). concord charges a forced option of $893 which includes wheel locks, mud flaps, all season mat, cargo mat and something I haven't seen or heard...a thin plastic around the front and back wheel well (Nope, not fender flares). Supposedly to protect the wheel well.
