Warranty on accessories?

1557 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  misterjon
I was at the dealer today finalizing my MDX purchase, including deciding what options I want. When I told them I was planning on getting my options from my own source (aka Tim) and having them installed at a dealer closer to my house, they claimed that accessories installed by them at the time I take delivery have a 4 yr. warranty, but options I have put on after I take delivery only have a 1 yr. warranty. Is this true? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I have to get them my option list ASAP.

Thanks!

Yes, that is correct.

However, service departments have no idea whether the accessories were installed @ purchase or afterward, and often treat them as installed-at-delivery if that's how you treat them ;)
Really I thought they would have a record of what accesories where installed if you take it back to you dealer if you had a prob.
I cruised the dealer's lot on Sunday and their new demo has dealer installed BSM.

They were crooked!

I'd rather do the accesories' installations myself and get it right.
I don't even talk to the dealers about accessories. When I ordered my MDX, I demanded and received a 188 with NOTHING installed.

When they asked why, I just told them that's how I want it. They tried to get me to allow them to install the mud flaps and wheel locks. ($250) But I said no way. I never gave them a reason.

After reading this site, I came to realize that it pointless to get them to come down on the prices of their accessories. I simply ordered all of them from Tim.

After I got my MDX home, I took the next day off and installed everything. I save a mint both in parts and labor.

That is what my salesman told me (as he was apologizing for the high accessory prices at his dealership). However, when I looked in the Warranty Manual, that isn't how I read it. I will have to double check tonight, but here is what I remember.

Accessories installed at time of delivery are warrantied for the same period as the vehicle (4 yrs, 50,000 mi, etc). Accessories installed after delivery are warrantied for 12 months or the remaining warranty period on the vehicle. (That is, if you wait a year to put on you Acura side steps, they are only warrantied for 3 yrs or remainining mileage.) I believe this is only valid when installed by an 'authorized' service department, so most of us will only get the basic 12 months on things we install ourselves.

I'm not too worried about the warranty on my BSMs, cargo net, or fender flares. However, I will probably get a dealer to install the tow package, since that looks hard, and there is a lot that can go wrong later.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I'm going with a combo of dealer-installed accessories (things I don't trust myself to do right) and Tim-supplies accessories (things I'd be embarrassed not to be able to do right), and I'm told the X'll be here any day now...:D
