can a bad valve cover gasket cause p0420 code and misfires on all cylinders....i have a leak of oil from valve cover gasket. ive also had this problem before from vacuum hose leaks but this time the code popped up after I had a bad mechanic replace my valve cover gasket and the new one leaks oil still....

So, theoretically yes its possible. I say that because of the nature of the valve cover gasket, and if not done properly it can cause leaking into your spark plugs and essentially foul your spark plugs which causes the vehicle to run rich and destroy your Cat. The mechanic could've easily pinched the gasket or even one or more spark plug seals (which would easily allow oil to seep back into the spark plug tubes). If the vehicle hasn't been driven for too many miles I would suggest either doing it yourself or taking it to a competent mechanic to check the gaskets and seals, literally redoing the job again.
