Upgrade for NAV System

Does anyone know how often the NAV can be updated and the expected cost? I am still waiting for my MDX and wondering if I should ask the dealer to update the NAV system for free for the first year since I won't get mine until September sometime. (I'm probablly dreaming!) Thanks for your help.

Navi update info

From the Acura web site FAQ regarding the Nav

(Available at this page--click on the link to right):
http://www.acura.com/myacura/mya_index.asp

A: Upgraded software will be made available to Navigation System owners periodically, usually in the fall of each year. American Honda is continually expanding the scope of the Navigation System. Acura customers may call (888) 549-3798, or order on-line through http://www.acura.com.
Q: How much will the updated DVD Software cost?
A: The price is approximately $150 which includes shipping & handling.

Acura Customer Service gave me the phone # for Alpine and said that I can order the DVD update directly from them.
I called the ph# given: 1888-549-3798 and was answered by a voice message from Acura giving some info (ie myacura website) and than you're prompted to leave a message if you'd like a callback response.
I dialed a second time and pressed "0" as soon as the voice message came on. I was then directed to a live person who explained that although the version is now 2.0.4. there has been no change from 2.0.3... no updated info. (they changed from 2.03 to 2.0.4 since they sold out of all copies of that run and this is an internal way for them to monitor sales and so they relabeled it 2.0.4, HOWEVER NO CHANGES!

The new update should be ready in the fall 2001 again I was informed that the info regardsing what will newly be covered is still not yet available.

Hold on to your money don't go for 2.0.4!
Version 2.04

mystMDX,
Thank you for following up on it.
Can someone tell me if I can retrofit the Navi system? I bought my MDX without one (stupid me!).

Thx in advance.
Don't Forget About Tim

Guys,
I am assuming the DVD update is considered a part. Tim at Hondacuraworld sells parts at good prices to forum members and is one of our moderators. He also welcomes suggestions from us about what should be monthly specials. When the new update is available, how about suggesting to Tim that it be a Monthly special. Tim where ever you are what do you think of this?
Good idea rem, but.....

I think any update is available on-line and not at the dealers. This probably does not ship from Honda/Acura nor do they even handle it. I'm sure Tim will know for sure.
After 2 weeks, I finally received a phone call from owners link regarding my email on Nav coverage upgrade. It continues to baffle me that Honda/Acura puts these poor customer service people on the "front lines" with little or no information. Without mentioning this site, I believe "I" informed her more than she did me. I asked why owners of the 01/02 have not seen an update yet and she said they were having "technical difficulties." I asked her if a dual layer disc will be available for the 01/02 players so that coverage can be increased. "What is a dual layer disc?" she said. I proceeded to explain that the 03 disc is dual layer and that allows for nearly twice as much information to be stored. This brings me to another question. 01/02 nav owners are "assuming" that full coverage is on the 03 DVD but I have not heard a peep from the new 03 nav owners. I have read that parking lots are covered(???) but am curious about actual continental coverage. I have a question that is the reason for me ranting. I live near Atlanta in Woodstock, Georgia. I am currently 2 miles away from the detailed coverage area. Can someone with an 03 Nav punch in Woodstock, Georgia and tell me if there is coverage??(besides interstates and main roads)I know that is just one area but it would prove to me that they have increased the detailed areas over my version. Thank you in advance.

We have nothing but rumors on a lot of the 03 navi, even though it's running around in members cars.
  1. Disk are dual layers - this has not been confirmed yet. A good indication would be to pull one out and look at it. Dual layer disks are a gold color, singles are silver
  2. We don't know that the 01/02 players don't read dual layers
  3. We have no idea of the coverage of the 03 disks
  4. We don't know if the 3D software will work on 01/02 HW
  5. We don't know if the voice feature can be added if the 01/02 HW is compatible with the 03 SW
    [/list=1]

hockeyplayer, I just checked my 03 navigation. Woodstock is still not a detailed coverage area. I actually was dissapointed to find out when I picked my X up that my home city is not either. Impressed as I am with the X's navi system, I think there is still a lot of work to be done in detailing more coverage areas.
I just popped out my dvd and it does have a gold hue more than a silver one. It has no label or indication that it is dual layer though. I'm not sure how else to confirm if it is dual layer. My Sony dvd player can read dual layer disks so I put it in there but it couldn't be recognized as a disk.

Not sure if this helps or not.

Thank you very much for your time. I really appreciate it. :29:

Now.....What is the real deal with the 03 coverage?I wonder if Acura put a voice activation system and a fancy calander and calculator to the "old" coverage?. Someone please correct me if I am wrong? Here is another thing the 03 users can try. Anything in Mississippi, Montana, or South Dakota covered in detail???
Hockeyplayer might be right. I does look like the old coverage with a new wrapper. I have family in Montana and have been throughout the state many times so I can check that out and see if there is detail or not. I'll let you know what I find out.

Sounds like 03 is dual layer. All we have to do know is get you to park next to an 01/02 and let them try to load your disk and see if it can read it.
