Touring Alloys - Chromed!

2963 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  DubbedSSmdx
As promised in an earlier post, here's a shot of my '02 Touring Alloys before and after chroming. Actually, I swapped my stock alloys for a set already chromed (presumably my set was then off to the chrome-plating shop for the next customer). Incidently, my Acura dealer charges $1900 for chromed wheels!! I got mine through a local wheel shop for (pause for dramatic effect) $500. Talk about dealer mark-up!

Nice Wheels

Great looking wheels and the price sure was right! Makes the MDX look alot slicker.
Shiny Surfaces Match

Thanks, mdxpurist. With all the shiny surfaces on the MDX (door handles, headlight reflectors) having the polished finish, it just completes the look now that the wheels match. Plus, it's always fun to "beat the dealer" price-wise. ;)
I agree, great look/great price!!
Anyone know of a similar trade-in set up in Maryland? :p
Oooohhh, those are nice! The chrome kind of gives the illlusion of bigger wheels IMO.

Hi Leader,

Can you list the name of the place for "exchanging" the stock for chromed one for $500. Is advance ordering required? How long would it take to order and install. I am thinking about going down LA this Xmas to have it done. Thanks.

It took him about a week to get the wheels in stock for me, so, I would schedule your visit in advance to be certain the wheels were available.
The entire process took about 20 minutes. Drive in - wheels off - tires off wheels - tires on new rims - balanced - new wheels on car - you're done.
Total tab for the exchange and mounting = $540 ($500 + tax).
Thank you very much, Leader. I will schedule in advance with them.
What about San Francisco or San Jose?

Hey, tdnone...if you are in the Silicon Valley, I'd bet there are several tire/wheel stores in San Jose or San Francisco that would offer OEM chrome wheel exchange deals similar to the guys at Wesco here in L.A. I know of three places here in the San Fernando Valley that sell chromes.
Why not "let your fingers do the walking" and check out the Yellow Pages for "Wheels" in your area?
details, details

Hey Guys, when they chrome the wheels, what finish do they put on the center cap? Do they leave it stock or do they chrome this and apply the Acura logo, with all the shine on the picture I cant tell

actually i see the acura logo.. and it looks like original, chromed
Center caps

On the chromed wheels - the center cap is chromed, too. The Acura "caliper" logo is the same "decal" as on the stock alloys. It's tough to see in the picture because the wheel is so shiny!
Leader, nicely done! I gotta have it.....now if I can only find a place in Texas that can dupe what you did in CA......very sweet! And thanks for the pics!
Chrome or not to Chrome

I defineatly need to chrome my rims because they look like crap with all these little scratches. The roads here in Lousiana are much worse then in NY. The sratches aren't all that noticeable but when it comes to my MDX I'm a perfectionist. I just can't decide if I sould either chrome my rims are due the rims in black metalic. Has anyone done black metalic? Does it look good, I have black side steps for contrast.
real chrome

If you want chrome you have to go all out guys. Chrome stock is nice for the winter, but nothing looks as good as twenty's...
