No, I think that is a terrible idea.

235/65R17
Diameter: 29"
Width: 9.3"
Sidewall: 6"
Revs/Mile: 695

235/45R17
Diameter: 25.3" (-12.8%)
Width: 9.3"
Sidewall: 4.2" (-30%)
Revs/Mile: 797 (+102)

You're looking at a tire that is over 10% shorter, and has 30% less side wall, without increasing the rim size. This would look absurd on your vehicle. On top of that, it's going to screw up your speedometer readings. When your speedometer indicated 70mph, you'd actually be traveling just over 80mph.

Why wouldn't you get the proper size?

I agree, P235/45R17 is a common tire size for regular-sized passenger vehicles, not SUVs. That sidewall height difference will be very noticeable, both visually and in driving dynamics.

Use this tire size equivalency calculator if you're interested in using a non-OEM spec size: https://tiresize.com/calculator/
