This is not intended as a comparo just a odd turn of events. The wife and I decided to go test drive the GMC Envoy mostly because of the MT SUV award and the commercials which basically shamed us into test driving an american car. GM is also offering $2002 cash back which certainly doesn't hurt.
Anyhow, I was impressed with the sheer number of gadjets in the Envoy and at a Carsdirect.com price of about $34 you do get a lot of doodads for your money. They certainly offer more techie things than the MDX although some features like rain sensitive wipers are of questionable necessity.
Anyhow, after the test drive the salesman configured the car all the while making silly comments like, "This car can go for 100K miles without an oil change. They don't recommend it but it can."
I think the poor imbecile confused himself with the tune-up. Anyhow, then the manager came over and of course tried the hard sell approach which wasn't going to even budge the wife and myself. He asked what other SUV's we had looked at we told him the QX4 and the MDX. He said, "MDX's are hard to get." I agreed! They laid down a quote about 2K higher than carsdirect.com which I thought was gouging but hey, I guess someone would have paid for it.
Not me!
Anyway, after we were done we decided to go up to the Acura Dealership to see if they could tell us when we would get the SS Nav that we put a down payment on. At this point, it's almost a joke, we've had a down payment on it since July and we almost scrapped the whole thing in September to buy a QX4 but it didn't work out. We had the QX4 all lined up to pick-up but our pick-up date was 9/11 and our insurance co. closed early. The next day the wife and I canceled our order because my company works directly with the airlines and United is one of our accounts.
As it turns out my company had some lay-offs but I wasn't. Still we wanted to be safe and we didn't know if my job would be safe so we opted to commute together to work until things changed.
Way back in July when we put the down payment on the SS Nav we were told that they time frame was somewhere early in 2002 but the salesman didn't give me any hard information. He was friendly and the car was going for MSRP so I decided to go ahead and do it. Well I haven't heard from them since so I didn't have much confidence walking into Acura of Milford Sunday night. As it turns out they were closing up for the night but a salesman asked us if he could help us. We told him the situation and he asked us our name. We told him and he said, "oh yeah, you ordered the SS with Nav. You're on the next allocation, I have the build date on my desk." We followed him stunned and he showed us our name on a list next to vehicles along with about 7 or 8 others. He said the build dates are 2/9-2/12 and I can expect it maybe the second but probably the third week in Feb.
So now I've waited patiently for almost 6 months now without any real anxiousness because I didn't want the car during the period of uncertainty and now I'm finding the last few weeks extraordinarily frustrating. The wife and I are very excited, she just wants a second car again and one that has the cargo space that she's been wanting and I can't wait to get a hold of that Nav system that I haven't even seen in action since our test drive was a touring w/o Nav.
How does anyone stand it in the final stretch?
