Tan Cargo Liner Alternative (hopefully)

3630 Views 16 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bef
I couldn't find anywhere else on this site where someone had already looked at this, so here goes my post.

In search of a tan liner (something soft and cushion-like), I came across the Hatchbag. http://www.hatchbag.com/hatchbag.html
I chose it over the tan husky cargo tray/liner because I needed to protect the sides from my Chewy's drool. It also looks like it's relatively easy to take in and out (I thought I saw one website that showed how you can fold it up and place it back in a pouch when not in use, but I can't find it again). I hope this ease doesn't mean that it shifts around alot while my dog's walking around back there.

Anyway, it should be here by end of the week. For anyone interested, I'll post how it performs and looks.

about tan cargo liner from husky.
Thanks and I did HEAVILY consider Husky. But I have a tall dog (greyhound) who stands while staring out the window and leaves drool all over the sides underneath the window. He doesn't drool like a Mastiff or anything, but it's bad enough. So it looks like the hatchbag will protect the sides from that. The other problem is he hates to walk on slippery surfaces, which also ruled the Husky out.
Hatchbag

dmyles,

Did you ever get the hatchbag?
Did you get the long one that fits over the 2nd and 3rd row seats or the short one that fits over the 3rd row seats?
Do you like it?
Does it hold up by itself or do you need to use velcro to hold it in place?

TIA

Bef: I did get the hatchbag. It took me weeks to find time to devote to installing it, so I forgot to come back and post. Anyway, I did get the 'regular' size; i.e., the short one that goes over the third row.

So far, I do like it. I got the tan color, and I like the way it looks against the saddle interior.

They do give you lots of little velcro tabs to put in around the back to keep it in place. The only place where it sags slightly is where it meets the second row-- only because I didn't want to put a velcro sticker on the leather. Most times I don't even notice the sag. It doesn't look bad.

I rarely haul anything other than my greyhound so I've only had one occassion where I had to detach part of the liner in order to push the second row down so I could haul something large. I learned I need to be careful when I need to detach any part of the liner so as to not pull the velcro tabs off the pillars, etc. I don' t know how this compares to the official Acura cargo liner or if the attachment mechanisms are different for that.

Lastly, if you use this in conjunction w/ a separation net like I do, you will have to modify the liner slightly by cutting out holes where the separation net anchors are. Again, no big deal.

Its a good material that can be easily washed down with a damp cloth or (or taken out and hosed down completely, I suppose).

I've never seen the official cargo liner in person, so I don't have that to compare to--- but I'm pretty pleased with the Hatchbag.

I'll post a few pics on Saturday so you can see what it looks like installed.

Thanks for the info!!

I read the instructions for the Acura Cargo liner and it also used velcro to hold the sides up.

I probably won't use the velcro if I can find a way to hold up the sides without them.

I did a quick web search this morning and I found several places, other than the manufacturer, that sold it (mostly pet and hunting stores). None mentioned anything about the color. In the pictures they show a white one. I prefer a gray colored one but it doesn't matter too much to me since I will use it on occasion and remove it when not in use.

I just ordered the Acura cargo tray for normal shopping and I'll probably get the full hatchbag for major hauling.

:)

So far as I know, the only colors it comes in is Grey and Tan...so that white color you think you're seeing is actually Grey (i guess it's just a really light grey color).

Anyway, here are a few pics of the tan installed in my X.

Side view....... I should note that I do not have the Touring model, so I don't have that additional speaker in the back and there is no cutout provided for in the Hatchbag. I believe the acura one does have that incorporated though.

Close-up of how I had to modify it so the Separation net could attach to the anchors....just a small cut-out.

Close-up of how the front attaches to the pillar. Again, I have the regular size-- it only covers the third row. I don't know where these anchors would attach if you had the larger size hatchbag that covers the second row too.

dmyles,

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics.
It looks really good in your X.

Since I won't be hauling around drooling dogs, I won't be using a separation net. I also don't want to cut a hole in the hatchbag since the reason I will use it is because I'm hauling messy stuff like the bags of topsoil I bought earlier today.
I may change my mind later on if cargo starts flying towards the front when I drive. Since I already have the cargo net, maybe I can use it as a separation net.

I don't care if it covers the subwoofer in the side.

As far as attaching the hatchbag to the sides, I can stretch a bungee cord between the two cutouts for the cargo cover and attach Gator Clips to them to clamp onto the sides of the hatch bag. For the full size bag, I can also use the coat hanger hooks on the roof to help hold up the sides near the front.

I guess I'll start shopping around for a grey one. Most of the web sites that carry them are poorly designed. Only two actually let me specify a vehicle while all the others required you to call in the order. I didn't see any mention of a choice of colors but now I know what to look for.

dmyles,

After looking at your pics some more, couldn't you have attached the front hatchbag cable to the roof mounted support you are using for the separation net?

I also didn't realize how high the sides are. My idea of using the cargo cover holes may not work

I guess I'll just have to figure it out when I get it.
I'm not sure attaching the cables to the roof mounted supports for the separation net would work. But I guess you can try out different configurations based upon your needs.

As far as ordering goes, I remember looking at several sites, but in the end, I decided to order directly from the Hatchbag company itself, in NC. I called them up and told the woman on the phone I needed something in a matter of days for a trip. When I told her it was for an MDX, she said they didn't have any immediately in stock. But then she put me on hold to speak to the "plant" who made one the next day. I think I ordered on a Tuesday and had it by Friday morning. She was also real helpful in explaining how to prepare the X for the installation while I was waiting for it to arrive. (i.e., cleaning the surfaces so the velcro tabs stick best).

I think you did the right thing by ordering from the mfg.
I'll probably do the same since it looks like what the other companies do is take orders and then pass them along to the mfg. I'm not sure if they have the mfg drop ship to me or to them and then they ship to me.

I'll also get a chance to choose a color.

Thanks again.
Dana,

I ordered the grey full sized hatchbag yesterday from the mfg. It turns out that after hours they have an answering service to take orders. I hope the order isn't screwed up.

I also found out that Tim shipped the cargo tray. I'll probably have this in the back most of the time and use the hatchbag for the really big and messy loads.

Thanks again for all the info!
Woohoo!!

All these new toys coming in for my MDX.

Now I can concentrate on buying other toys.

Oops, now I don't have any excuses for not working on the house... Shelving for the garage. Flooring for the attic. Soil for the garden. BBQ for the rear patio. Garden shed. Greenhouse. More sprinkler lines.

I guess I'll install the HIDs first. :D
