Dumb question....are the controls on the steering wheel supposed to be illuminated? and.... is there supposed to be an illuminated indicator for the gear shift (to let you know what gear you are in)? Just wondering - no big deal.

No, the buttons on the steering wheel aren't illuminated and the gear you're in is illuminated on the dashboard dial but, not on the gearshifter, itself.
