Hi folks,

Longtime lurker here...

I have a (what I hope, at least) a small problem with my 2004. I've noticed a slight shudder from the underside of the car, seeming to come from the transmission, but I'm not sure.

It happens ONLY when I am maintaining my speed, and only at 32-37 mph, and RPM of about 1300-1500. The RPMs usually rise 100-200 RPM during the few seconds when it happens.

It is just during these parameters. Give it gas, and it ends. Below or above those speeds and with RPMs below and above - no shudder.

I've noticed it for several months, and have finally gotten around to isolate it. It hasn't gotten worse over time. Just an annoyance, or is it something a little more serious?

Thanks in advance,
Stuart

I had a slight shudder/noise when my 04 was new. Dealer replaced the transmission transfer assembly and then it was gone.

Some times I would notice transmission shudder when climbing up a hill but it would go away quickly.

Transmission shudder is a common issue. There should be a good number of threads on this on mdxers.org. Here are some I found:
https://www.mdxers.org/forums/73-first-generation-mdx-2001-2006/166688-torque-converter-shudder-2004-a.html
https://www.mdxers.org/forums/74-second-generation-mdx-2007-2013/166582-changed-trans-fluid-big-improvement.html
https://www.mdxers.org/forums/73-first-generation-mdx-2001-2006/47507-hope-2002-transmission-shudder.html

To cure the issue, the first two things to try are:
1. Transmission fluid change. It's preferable to drain and fill the transmission fluid 3 times, with a little bit of driving in between each procedure.

2. Replace 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches/sensors.

These are the cheap repairs and can be done by a mechanically inclined owner. If these don't work, then the issue will likely require a more expensive and complicated fix.
