Dear All:

I need your input for my MDX regarding Sale, Storage, or Transport to Europe.

I will be transferred to Europe for about 4 years. I have had my MDX for one year and I love it.

What are your opinions?

(1) Sale it, and how much for now?

(2) Put it into a storage? Is that a good idea or rusty will ruin it?

(3) Transport it to Europe? So I can continue driving it?

Appreciate your input.

PS:

My MDX is 2002 Touring package with Navigation System, plus:

Running Boards
Mud Gurd
Fender Flares
Body Side Molding
Visor
Wheel Locks
All Season Floor mates
Cargo Tray
Cargo Net
Wood Panel
Beige Color

IMHO, don't take it to Europe. Gas prices are astronomical, and there is always the parts issue. Whether you sell or store it is another matter. Is it realistic to sell and try to convince yourself you'll get another when you get back? Storing it is another expense you don't need-paying for it and not using it. I'd sell, get another when you come back - easy for me to say though 'cos I'm not the one faced with your dilemma. Just remember, driving in Europe is different, narrower roads, mega traffic jams, costly gas, and public transportation is very cheap. Maybe a lease of some kind (though probably not on an X) is available over there that will provide you some independence. Where are you going?

I agree with greatscot. Sell it, it's not worth storing it for 4 years and I just returned from Europe.....you will have a tough time paying for the gas and parking the X over there. Go to Europe, enjoy yourself, and buy yourself a new X when you get back. Heck, Acura may have even fixed the gas tank sloshing noise by then. :D

If it were me I'd sell it. Besides the expense of storing the MDX will also depreciate significantly in value in 4 years.

Sell, invest the money you get out of the X in the stock market, then you will have enough money to buy a 10 year old Ford Escort when you return. Just kidding, the stock market will probably do better in the next 4 years than it has done in the last 3 years.

Also, use your imagination, and think about all the new features/power the 2007 MDX will have.

JerryMDX: First off....you could have one heck of a yard sale with all those accessories:). Doesn't it suck when you have to make that decision!!!I worked in the Bahamas for 4 years.I ended up selling my pride and joy. My Acura Integra GSR. I shed a tear when the fellow drove it away but I knew it went to good owner. Just remember that no matter how great the vehicle is....in 4 years there is gonna be something better and you will be happier. I know I am now:) Good luck.

Depends on your money situation. Gas prices are astronomical indeed in Europe. Economical solution would be to sell it now, use public transportation in Europe (where available) and buy something new upon your return. Or, you could buy a really nice used BMW or Mercedes for cheap price there and have fun!

However... If I did not have a big money issue, I would take it with me. EVERYBODY will be checking out that MDX of yours!!!

Again, for me it would all depend on my money situation.

I would sell it. To me it would not be worth the money to store it, not to mention the shipping fees to get it over there. Bummer!:(

As one speaking from overseas (Ireland) since Christmas 2001 - sell it.

We thought we would be back in the States mid 2002 so bought our X in February (made a trip home to do the taxes and buy the X) and now I wish I hadn't so that I could have bought the 2003 instead. Not that I don't love my X, but she has been sitting in the garage for almost a year with 850 miles on it and all I can do is be envious of the members here who are driving their X.

Also - I would NEVER ship my X to Europe (well, Ireland at least) as nice as Europeans can be, they are horrendous parkers and the parking spaces cannot accommodate a mini cooper!! The dings and scratches make me really happy that my X is not here. Especially when I see 2002 MBZ E's with bumper and door dings!! I won't even tell you what we saw in Spain in regards to someone 'parking' their car (horrors!!).

Buy a MBZ or BMW when you get here - the bigger the engine, the cheaper the car. We bought a putz-around 1988 MBZ 230 station wagon for US$2000 but it costs $500/year to tax - assuming it passes the MOT. My husband goes to great lengths to get rid of any new scratches or dings on the s/w and she looks stunning because of him. It is a wonderful vehicle for the family and an astounding price - you would never be able to buy one in the States for that price. So buy yourself a run-around over here.

Once you get to Europe, you may find that all you want to do is travel which can be incredibly cheap (see: www.ryanair.com). Currently, a Gran Canaria vacation package for 7-days (flights/transfers/hotel) is going for US$199 pp/2-share thru a local travel agent. You won't miss your car...

Anyway, just my 2 cents. Best of luck.

This is an easy one: sell it.

For all the reasons others have noted. Look at it as an opportunity to drive a European car made for European roads/consumers. Who knows, maybe you'll come back with a nice, hard-to-find-in-the-US BMW, MB or Volvo...

Sooooo, where will you be living?

Happy Trails,
Traveller

Interesting- I'm in a similar situation

Interesting that most people say sell it, because I have been lurking on the board in the hopes of buying an MDX and taking it to Spain with me in '04 for my tour over there. I was stationed there before with the military, and saw all kinds of vehicles. A lot depends on where you are going to be living and what you are planning on doing with the car. Since I'm in the military, the gas isn't an issue because on-base prices are about the same as in the states:)

Since I'm faced with the restriction of only having one car in Europe to carry myself, my wife, two large dogs, and any kids we have in the next few years, I have been looking at the MDX as that one vehicle. A lot of the driving would be around the base and around southern Spain, which is pretty rural, with a nice highway system.

I certainly wouldn't store yours, but it depends on access to gas and you vehicle needs as to whether you should keep it or not.

Good luck.

Re: Interesting- I'm in a similar situation

I have two young kids who are in elementary school ages. While we will be there, we do need a car/suv/van for them. The public transportation is pretty impressive.

I love my MDX and the depreciation is high, so I was (am?) thinking to bring it with me. The gas (Petrol) price is about 4 times comparing to the States.

While I visited the area where we will go a while ago, I also found all kinds of cars/suvs/mini vans <- the big ones, such as Lexus L 470, RX300, Toyoto SUVs, and America mini vans. The road condition is fine, but parking is an issue.

You could sell it and pick up an XC90 while you are over there and Volvo will ship it back to the US for you.:D
