Rim Job

1401 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DMor
Sadly, today, just 2 weeks after picking up my baby, I sideswiped a curb when making a turn (still not used to the width yet). The tire was fine, but theres a fairly significant scratch/gash in the rim. Its up by the edge right next to the tire, so its not that noticeable. But, its killing me. A new rim is like $250 and i cant justify it right now. Any ideas on how to either fix it or make it look better???
Thanks, Josh

Josh,

How close are the scrapes/gashes to the rubber? Does it go right up to the rubber? Just asking as it's important that it isn't right on the edge where it might affect the bead -- you might as well be driving an Explorer w/Firestones. Just checking.

Insofar as the potential fix, check out the detailing/carcare forum on www.ls1.com and do a search for "rims" or similar. Those guys are always scratching theirs up. You might also check www.autopia-carport.com (formerly Autopia Forums) or the TL board for ideas.
rim scrape

Worm, the scrapes dont abut the rubber at all. So, i dont think itll cause a prob w the tire. Ill try those 2 sites you mentioned and get back to you. Thx, Josh

Hey Josh-

On the back of Car & Drive magazine there is an ad that provides repair for ALL types of rim. Check them out. You cant miss it.

RIM!

Hi..

I got an idea for you.. get a new rim and tire, and put the hurted one in as the spare

So you'll have your self a good spare rather then the small funky spare the car came with..

As I can remember there is a guy on e-bay selling a rim with tire.. but it's the non-touring
rim..

You might want to check it out.

Check out Transwheel Corporation:

http://www.transwheel.com/about/about_locations.html

I had one of our (non-MDX) rims replaced. 1-800-892-3733.

You buy a new wheel and in our case...send the old one back for a credit....usually $50 or so. Good luck.
