Reception

We have actually found the reception to be good which is surprising. Living on the shores of lake Erie we tend to have major problems here with reception for whatever reason. Our cell phones don’t work well (call 911 here on a cell and you get Canada), radio stations 50 miles away don’t come in good, TV with an antenna is a joke. But the MDX actually IMHO does really well compared to our other cars.

Reception

I also have noticed that my MDX has excellent radio reception. I also own a 2000 3.2 TL and the reception on the TL is much worse than the MDX.

Great FM Range

On our road trips I have very pleased with the great FM range which means you are NOT constantly having to find new stations. I can't comment on AM since I never listen to it.
By the by, have you found the two band feature which allows you to autoscan and program stations where you are without messing up your at-home settings?

I think reception is good ...

... it appears a little better than in our old Expedition.

As far as trips go we listen almost exclusively to CDs on trips so have not tried tested the radio much.

You've got to try that radio alternate station option. Just be carfeul when going back to your presets. If you don't do it correctly, it resets them. Happened to us the first time. Although, the worst that happens is that you have to rest the originals.

Happy Listening!

RR, want to elaborate on this one? Heaven forbid I should try to dig it out of the manual! :)

Autoselect

You hit the scan buttom, on the Touring it's on the lower left. The radio then does an auto scan and repopulates all the presets. When you hit it again it returns them to the original presets. I know this was discussed on the thread elsewhers and -yes- in the manual in the audio section.
Try it - you'll like it!

On the touring the button is lower left and is labeled A SEL. Press once for a scan and temp preset of local AM/FM stations that come in well. Press again to restore your hometown presets.

Well that sure saves me from reprogramming my stations each time I return from a trip. Doh! (smacks head)
Silly me, I used to always use FM2 for that. Does anyone know if the A.Select reprograms FM2 as well as FM1 and AM?

poor AM reception

My 01 Base has very poor AM reception and not great FM. After discussing this with the dealer several times with out any action I pulled mine beside a new one on the lot and turned both radios on. After that the dealer installed a new radio but I could not tell the reception was any better. I have given up and installed XM

I've noticed that the '01 MDX I bought recently has much worse AM reception that my '04 TL. I used to sit in the parking garage at work and listen to the radio over lunch, no way I can do that with the MDX.

There is a Service News and Techline summary to improve AM reception. It is *not* a TSB. My previous dealer (Concord Acura, which sucked) denied its existence.

My new dealer (Pleasanton Acura, which is good) specifically mentioned it and then printed it out for me. It has to do with cleaning connections on the antenna base, or replacing the antenna assembly (both require pulling down the rear of the headliner).

It made a world of difference.

The inital reference is in the Feb04 issue of ServiceNews; I don't know the date of the subsequent techline summary.
