Thanks for the updates. For my money, I am willing to pay more for the second best radar just to get a remote mount (Passport, Whistler or Bel). I've had the K40 remote in my last to vehicles and find the remotes vastly superior ot the dash mounts for cosmetics, theft elimination, and it's always on when your driving. There is a big premium for the remotes, but if you haven't tried it, it's something to consider.

Radar detectors????What radar detectors?? I dont need no stinking radar detectors...

HAHAHA.

What I like to do is take the infared monitoring system from a Cadillac. Tweak it so that not only does it detect heat but also Radar waves and heat source from a laser. This would be IDEAL since the cadillac monitoring system can detect an object up to two miles away.

Alvin - What do you mean when you refer to "remote mounts"? I have two Bel's (one for the DX and one in my wife's wheels) and don't recall hearing or reading anything about remote mounting. Both detectors are windshield mounted. Am I missing a great feature?

when you can tweak it to detect radar waves what is it?
Radar detector. And because it detects a freq, your display is limited to either a blinking dot, freq reading or audible alarm, no pics.

when you can detect a heat source from laser, that means its too sensitive. So it will be a taxi, SUV, Garbage truck, deer detector.

With that in mind, 2 miles is boring since theres too much action in close proximity.

What's cool is imagine a radar LOCATOR integrated to NAV display. It displays location of the signal as a blinking dot and aprox distance based on radar strength. But then it will not be accurate because it only detects the signal.
So much for it. I'll stick to my Valentine 1

Here's what I learned about my V1:

V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.7 gives high performance on all radar bands. Also,it remembers your “mode” setting when shut off. Has stack of four LEDs on front panel for band identification. Front and rear laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: While this version is not quite up to today’s V1 standard for Ka, it’s almost always good enough, and always better than detectors from other makers. X and K performance is excellent. Upgrading merely to improve radar performance is not cost effective, in my opinion. Upgrading does bring other benefits, including our latest Generation 3 front-and-rear laser warning, which is a significant improvement over the Generation 2 technology used in this unit.

Our Instant Upgrade* will make the following improvements to your V1.

Our best Ka-band performance.
Our best X-band performance.
Our best K-band performance.
Adds radar coverage on Ku-band (used in Europe).
Our best, Generation 3 laser warning, front and rear.
Reduces V1's case height by about ¼ inch.
Reduces V1's weight by about 1.5 oz.
Latest windshield mount with new suction cups.
Latest visor mount.
New Lighter Power Adapter.
New Direct-wire Power Adapter
New coiled cord.
New straight cord.
New wiring-harness connector.
Dual-Lock® fastener.
New Owners Manual.
Spare fuse.
Spare suction cups.
One-year limited warranty, same as new units.

*INSTANT UPGRADE: As soon as we receive your old unit (in operable condition with no tampering of the serial number) we’ll exchange it for a brand-new, current-production V1. This is our way of assuring you’ll be without V1 protection for the shortest time.
PRICE: $189 plus shipping

Keep in mind that a new one costs $399.
Now my question is, will this work with my current remote display?

Any good engineers out there that can take the remote display output (direction, strength, number of emitters, type) and overlay it on the Nav display using a RGB combiner?

JPOW - You are missing a great feature, but you have to buy a completely different unit. The actual dectector is mounted under the hood (behind the grill) and all you have inside is a small readout display. Looks good, doesn't get stolen. Try this link:

Would like to know if anyone has looked into the Phantom II or Phantom III radar detector/Jammer by Rocky Mountain Radar.

This thing costs $250 has a bunch of LED that emit light pulses and RF waves and claims to make you "invisible" to radar and Laser.

Any thoughts on this thing???

Yeah, don't waste your money on it! The radar detector is pretty weak and the jammer feature is just bogus. I made a thorough research about 2 years ago when I bought my V1 and read a lot about the Phantom bull. So far I'm very pleased with V1 and has saved me at least 8-10 tickets. The only problem I have is that you tend to speed up and the mileage goes south big time! (made a trip from New Orleans to Memphis with an average of 90 mph and only14 mpg. OTOH when I keep it at 60-65 mph I get about 25-28 mpg)

Take care,
ubik

I still say there's just no way to beat a Valentine One. I've had two now. My first was purchased more than 10 years ago when first released. My second was purchased last summer and I couldn't be happier with either.

Many people have told me that the Passport escort 8500 is better than the Valentine. what do you think?
I tend to lean towards the Valentine because you can always upgrade to new technology and the detector tells you where the radar is comming from as far as which direction. Alot less false triggering also.

The 8500 is upgradable, as well.

I've had the 8500 for about a year, and I'm very pleased with it. It's the second Escort that I've owned, and it's the 5th Escort in the family - we've only owned Escorts for the last 20 years. My Dad had one of those huge, original Escort detectors! Anyone remember those?? (about 6" wide, 1.5" tall, & 6" deep - wait, that sounds like a V1 !! :D )

detectors

The Valentine is small, it just looks big from their advertisements. As far as appearance goes I prefer my 8500 over the V1 I use to use. Although the Valentine does include the thin wire for hideing in the seam while that is an optional accessory for the 8500. The outlet plug for the 8500 has a detection warning light which is pretty cool for the X since our outlet is right under the radio so it adds to the electronic awe.

Radar Pics in X

Here is a pic of the 8500 in my X. Very sleek with a nice display. Notice the very visible thick wire.

Here is a pic of the power plug. It looks great under the radio. The flashing display is good because it can alert you even when muted.
