Dude that is 7 things, not 8.

And they sound like stuff that should be done in a CAR.

o-60!?!??
Sport Sedan handling (BUY A SPORT SEDAN)!?!?!
Top speed of 135mph (How long does that take)!?!?!?!

The only decent reason you named for the SUV was #1.

I hope your not one of those people driving your SUV like it's a Civic:(

Dude! ???? (hOW OLD ARE WE...?)

Try a little reading comprehension. The response was aimed at folks complaining at the large size of the MDX. The MDX is big and efficiently designed; however, it has the best combination of the factors I mentioned: (Handling, perfromance, gas efficiency), yet still has seven passenger seating. If you owned an MDX you would understand this. After driving BIG SUv's for years those factors are important to me. I don't want a Sport Sedan or a Civic (??huh).

You go buy what is important to you (Civic) and I'll continue to enjoy the best handling andf performing SUV with 7 passenger seating and 23 MPG on the planet.

TO ME, the MDX is WIDE, not large. Expeditions etc etc and truxks that require the BEEP BEEP in reverse are large to me. The MDX is WIDE. Really adds to the feeling of spaciousness.

Okay, BUB, what ever floats your boat. LexRx knows what kinda car I drive (and I am happy too!)

Yeah, what'd I'd be driving if I didn't have an SUV, oh, and If I could afford one:p The GS 400 would be one of my top pics in sedans. Sweeet, smooth V8 power. Now the MDX'ers probably think we are in cahoots!

I have nothing against the MDX. I really like it for many reasons. I say: if you need to room go for the MDX, if not the RX is where it's at;) No need to comment, that's just my opinion.

Why are we here? Finding out info on the new Lexus suv, seeing what others are thinking - leaving the realm of ClubLexus. I frequent this board anyway - I'm a fan of most car-based SUV's.

To me, there are five categories of SUV:

1) Small (Santa Fe, CR-V, Escape, Freelander)

2) Medium (RX300, MDX, X5, ML, Explorer, Grand Cherokee)

3) Large (Tahoe, Yukon, Navigator, Sequoia)

4) Extra Large (Tahoe XL, Yukon XL, Expedition)

5) Niche (Range Rover, LX470)

In the medium category, the MDX is the largest based on interior volume and usable capacity. The RX300 and X5 are the smallest. For me, I don't need so much space to warrant the downside (handling, MPG, visibility) of moving up to a larger category. As stated by dancall, the MDX handles great for an SUV. However, I wouldn't say that it or even the X5 handles as well as a car. The sheer weight, height, and high center of gravity prevent any SUV from handling like a car. To 1SICKLEX's point, there are a lot of SUV drivers that get themselves in trouble by ignoring the different handling characteristics physics bestows on all SUV's. The AllRoad and XC70 are better choices for those that want extra utility but true car like handling. To each their own.

what about the land cruiser?

would that be extra large or niche?

We test drive one before the MDX came out because we wanted something larger than the RX300 and 4runner types, but the LX450(?) was too much $.

We were impressed with the size and carry capacity, but disappointed by the ride

I agree that no large vehicle, even a small SUV, will handle like a sporty car. Ok, my MDX does handle WAY better than the lincoln rental that I got stuck with last week, but not a good sporty lower, more streamlined vehicle...

Since the Land Cruiser is the same as the LX, it would fit into the "extra large" category in that list. But then I wonder why the Navigator and Expedition are in different categories, because they're the same, too. And if the Expedition is considered extra large, then what do you call the Excursion??!

Three inches, Vic?

Hi Vic,

Sorry to see you go the way of the Lexus. I won't try to be too harsh, since you've been a valuable member of this forum, and have added much to discussions about the MDX.

But three inches? I understand the other enticements, like the real wood and the killer Mark Levinson audio. I've played with the Navi on my father's LS430, and would say that it's marginally better, if at all. I thought it was more difficult to find businesses with the Lexus, though the graphics were prettier. Also, are you really going to do "serious" off-roading in the GX?

While I'm not single any more, my wife and I don't yet have kids. Yet, the width of the MDX and the space can come in really handy, like when we hauled a ton of stuff to Goodwill at the end of the year. A 42" two-drawer lateral file fit with tons of room for other stuff. While we almost never do that sort of thing, it was a godsend on that day. Also, when driving friends around, that extra three inches makes for much more rear-seat comfort.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the GX. I'm just surprised that the miniscule difference in width was really your deciding factor. If I had to decide again, the extra "width" of the Lexus' price tag would probably have made me buy the MDX again.

I am not against any fine vehicle myself. If I have all the money in the world I would buy the most expensive one in each of my 10 garages. :p The Lexus one also look pretty good but the @#$%470 will cost about $60K. The point is the MDX is in a niche luxary SUV market that is priced right yet perform wonderfully. Go buy a $50K and above lux SUV if you can. Your banker will like you. I can't (justify that).

Cars will always improve: I look at MDX as
- accelerate wonderfully like a BMW X5
- (much) More comfortable and less stiffy than BMW X5 and other truck based SUVs
- Has solid crash test result (next to the BMW X5).. close to perfect score.
- Has usable trunk space and seat arrangement..
- Has magic 3rd row seat that is instantly useful
- The dual control air and heating keep my kids happy in the back...
- Fuel efficiency 23 MPG on highway.. try that with your V8 ha!
- and so on..

If I am single and don't care about the extra space.. the Lexus or BMW will be just great. They are also attractive too. If I am old and alone, the MB would be nice. (and if we have teenager on this board, ANY CAR like a civic is great for a 16-year old. :) )

So if you are driving one that you like (and really really enjoy), that is what counts. The MDX is just beautiful. And it has most of the stuff I want....

Music please...

I knew somebody would catch that:D ..and NO, I'm using a Dell 8100 or an HP thank you!!;)

I actually love both colors for the MDX, and would have a rough time choosing. I don't see how some love the SS and others the Mahogony, it seems to be such a funny ongoing issue.

Oops. Meant Excursion. As for the LX and Land Cruiser, they're not extra large as their cargo volume isn't that great and their interior volume is actually a lot smaller than the MDX. I put them in the niche category because they and the Land Rover are truly designed for heavy duty off-road use which only a small percentage of people really care about. The list wasn't meant to be scientific - just my personal categorization of the market.

Mostly we do this because it's fun - but as you can see here, we've entered a new era:

this too big arguement is ridiculous CYA vic

Com'on too big. (as promlugated by Vicpai), Let's check out the weight of that bloated poser Lexus, (which is really just a Toyota Landcruiser with inflated priced trim). You want a BIG suv buy the landcruiser, er 470! No dispute that they are quality built but compared to the MDX too big!!??

Guess that is what happens when non owners pontificate about the MDX--having NO experience with the vehicle. Vic, don't you have any friends? In the MDX you can take you and 4 others in real comfort,...then pick up a couple more and be very socially responsible while getting 23mpg! Or in the Lexus at 16mpg. Ever want to carry a couple of bikes or how about some plywood. It lays flat in the MDX, sorry about the others.

Oh and when the new Honda SUV comes out it will be based on the Acura not the other way around..but who cares... its sounds like it will be even bigger! (oh God). ;)

The MDX is the best all around package among SUV's. Sure, it might not be the fastest, or the most luxurious, or the biggest, or the best handler, BUT, it is by far the best all around package.

IMHO, it has plenty useable space, combined with plenty of luxury(leather, power seats and mirrors, auto climate control), plenty of power, good ride and handling, capable 4-wd system, fair price, good fuel economy, and its an ULEV. Hopefully it will be reliable too.

Sure, the critics will nitpick about the VTM-4, or the fake wood trim(OMG!!) , but, there is no other SUV that surpasses it as a package. The X5 is too small, and has a stiff ride. the ML320 is too slow and unreliable, the ML430 or ML500 are equal or better from a performance standpoint, but they are gas guzzlers and cost $10k more.

Again, I am talking about the complete package- the best compromise.

my 2 cents

we are talking about the GX470, which is smaller than the LX470 and has the same engine. I believe you were referring to the LX. the GX is not as wide as the MDX, a little smaller, and it appears to be more luxurious.

I'm glad you found a vehicle that meets your needs. I just hope it doesn't cost more than $45k. It will have some stiff competition from the ML500, but when LEXUS launches a vehicle it is usually right on target.

Let's put things in perspective....according to the Bangkok Post,

"It is too early to say how much the GX470 will cost in Thailand. But given Lexus' current pricing policies, the GX470 could land here at 3.8 million to four million baht.

The LX470 now retails at 4.4 million baht through the authorised distributor, Lexus Bangkok. The RX300 is available only from independent importers and is priced at 3.2 million baht."

Hmmm......4 million bahts is a lot of trips to the plate.....I am a Lexus fan from long ago, but it would take a lot to make me substitute a pinch batter for the clean up hitter.
