My wife lost the driver 2 fob. I replaced it at a cost of ~$300. Needless to say; I was not anxious to give the new one to her.
I tried just placing it in the rear well but the car still detected it and I couldn't lock the car.
So I placed the fob in an old food can in the rear well and the car did NOT detect it.
I figured that if I ever lost driver fob 1, I could unlock the car with the Acuralink app and retrieve fob 2.
Fob 2 was placed in the can 1 1/2 years ago. Today, I needed fob 2 and the battery was totally dead.
The battery guy tells me that the fob needs to be at least 33 feet from the car or it will constantly search for it and that's why the battery died. What do you think?

anyway, i doubt it. i mean, would the red LED light indicator that blinks when a car alarm is armed really draw so much power (from the day before driving) that it'd drain the battery? i doubt it.

there must be some parasitic power draw coming form somewhere. if i am not mistaken. i think there was a topic posted here about parasitic draws on 3rd Gen MDXs.

If it's really just a spare, why not pull the fob battery and store it along with the spare fob? Throw in a spare fresh battery if you're really paranoid. Ziplock bags are wonderful things, and they are a fine insulator. You could even leave the fob disassembled if you don't want to have to deal with opening it "under duress" but it's pretty easy to pop open with the key. Remember, the car can be started with a dead fob battery and opened with the key, so the spare will only be useful if you lose the primary fob and you can somehow get to the spare.
AFAIK the fob will retain its programming indefinitely without a live battery installed.
