I just got my gc tour/navi mdx. I'm concerned about the mileage I have been getting. I've primarily been driving in-city but I'm getting just 13 mpg accrording to the trip computer. The dealer mentioned that the engine takes a while (~500 miles) before your performance improves. Is this true? Any personal experiences.

Also, do you know if you can set up the mdx to auto-lock all doors when you start driving?

MILEAGE:
I had pretty lousy mileage during my first few fill-ups. I averaged 15-16 mpg according to thr trip computer and my calculations. I find the computer's calculation to be pretty good, especially for the range. It seems to be an accurate (albeit constantly changing) estimate of how many miles you have left until your tank runs dry.

I took a highway trip of ~800 miles round-trip recently, and got about 22-23 mpg on mostly highway driving.

I am doing mostly city driving now, and averaging 16-16.5 mpg. :(

Oh well, you can't' have it all, and I am very happy with the MDX.

AUTO-LOCKING DOORS:
P.S. No, you cannot set the MDX to auto-lock when you put the transmission in Drive, as in other cars. I, personally, am very happy this does not occur. As an EMT, I will tell you that you WANT your doors to be unlocked, in case of an accident. It makes access much easier-- many cars would not have to be cut open if the doors were unlocked. Now, I know some people feel locking the doors is a safety issue to prevent car-jacking, etc. Well, I think if you are going to get car-jacked, it will happen with or without your doors locked. The accessibility issue is more important in my opinion. (But I think this is a separate discussion).

13mpg seems a little low... my worst has been 16 (stop and go traffic, short trips...)
Best has been around 22 mpg, on long trips that dont involve climbing mountains, which
cause the mpg to go down to around 19mpg or so... I do have a lead foot, but that stupid
big instantaneous mpg dial is constantly IN MY FACE to keep me from going wild ;-)
(guess, a boon in disguise...)

About mpg improvement as time goes on - i have heard that it takes a few thousand miles before
getting better mpg (even then, you are looking at an improvement of 1-2 mpg...), but not after
500 miles... 13 mpg is low and you should get it checked...

About autolocking doors, I agree fully with chris. regarding safety against car-jacking, the remote
key does unlock only the driver's side door upon one click, which in itself is a safety feature. Plus,
once the car is in drive (motion), it will be hard to get car-jacked :)

Hmmmmmmmm.......?!

I've only filled my tank twice so far, and my mpg have only been around 14 or so.

NOW...I'm concerned.

I only have city driven miles so far. NO HIGHWAY.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.................

Acura4Life,
I have a question for you that doesn't belong to this discussion, I remember you talked about this in other thread. You had your dealer scratch the car and he was supposed to repaint it. Did he just buff it somehow or the whole door was repainted? How big was the scratch? Some one scratch my car with a key and I am just wondering if it would be possible to just fix it instead of repainting the whole door.
Thanks for help.

Average MPG

During Break-in period I averaged 17.5 mpg and now with 3300 miles on the MDX I do about 18.5 mpg all these on combination city/highway driving. The worst I got was 15.5 mpg doing a lot of short trips. I also warm up the car every morning for about 3-4 min. which I think lessens my gas mileage. Overall I expected to get an average of 20 mpg (based on the 17/23 mpg on the sticker) but its not happening:(

MPG

I got 20.12 MPG (calculated) from my first tankful, mostly city driving. I avoid jackrabbit starts and try to coast into lights, though. Trip computer said 20.3, which I thought was pretty close. There seems to be "sweet spots" in speed to improve MPG - one is about 44 MPH. If I can stay at that speed for a long enough time, it will make up for a lot of time waiting at stoplights.

Almost all of my driving is city driving, and my milage is between 13 - 16 mpg, I now have about 2800 miles on it.
I'm not a real happy camper - I did not expect great mileage, but I did expect better

Have just gone through 1,000 miles, and mpg is running around 16 in mostly commuter driving (local roads + slow highway). Had hoped for a bit better, but expecting improvement as engine breaks in more and driving style improves.

Wait until you hear this friggin' story.
I took my MDX to the dealer to ONLY have the Rear Tailgate Deflector installed and they scratched my driver's side door. Mind you I never seen the scratch, but was told that it was deep enough to fit your finger nail in !!

Anyway, service informs me that they will fix it but they have to send it to a body shop to have the whole door re-painted. Oh...it gets better....keep in mind I haven't had my MDX for over a week now !! :(:(:(

Now the service department tells me that when they took the door off to be painted they LOST a clip that is needed to put the door back on !! WHAT ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Here I am STILL WAITING.
:(

Needless to say I will not be going back to the service department there anymore.

I am very disappointed. I have only driven my baby for about a week...on top of the world and now this......

Very sad. :(:(:(
Can't wait to get her back.
I have Razo Premium white Headlight bulbs & mud flaps to install upon her safe arrival home.

i hope the mpg gets to atleast 17 mpg on city only driving - otherwise it will be one more lie from the corporate world (being naive here...)
In fact, one of the reasons I got MDX was for it's 17/23 mpg...

Man, I would have lost it. After taking delivery last Friday, I took my MDX in on Tuesday to get the towing hitch installed (coolers were already on). I was upset that it took them about 3 hours longer than I was told, so I can't imagine what you are going through, esp. since the truck is so new. Hang in there.

Finally !!!

Just got the call from the dealer, my baby is ready to be picked up....after all of this mess.....there will be a complete visual inspection of the door, by me, including a flashlight !

LOL !

She better look good when I go get her today RIGHT after work.

:D

I'll keep you all posted of the experience with the service.

Granted we would all like to see the EPA estimates year round, but I believe those estimates are calculated at an optimum temperature of 68 degrees. From what I have seen from my Accord, my winter mileage 29-30 mpg is 20% less than my summer mileage 36-38 mpg. Taking that into account 14 city should be about the norm in the winter and if you are driving in snow it might even be less. If it's any conciliation, my Accord's mileage did not pick up till after the first full year.

Your all lucky though, I'm still waiting. My December build date go moved to 01/14/01.

For the first 1,200 miles I've averaged about 15.5-17.0 MPG. I'm really concerned that 800 of these miles were on the highway 400 each way. I thought that the mileage would be at least 20 mpg. Maybe it hurt beacuse I averaged about 85 MPH during the trip :)

I am getting 17.8 mpg according to my trip computer. I have around 2500 miles now with about 50/50 mixed city highway driving. Initially I had close to 19 mpg, but that was before the severe winter conditions hit here in the Midwest.

After about 5 or 6 tanks I've logged 19 - 20.5 MPG in mixed driving (form the trip computer.) Nothing lower! I'm fairly gentle still, but, I did take it up to the mountains. During the trip up it was averaging about 16 MPG, but, coming down... 50! Yeah, I know, I better watch the road and not the gadgets!

you guys getting the 14-15 in town must really be idling in a lot of heavy traffic or you are checking out the 240 ponies whenever the light turns green.

I have about 600 city/two lane highway miles on mine and am getting a tad over 20mpg according to the trip computer. I've only filled up once but will do it again tomorrow morning and calculate based upon the miles driven and the gallons to fill, but I expect the computer is reasonably accurate.
