MDX vs. Honda Pilot

As posted in an earlier thread, I am seriously considering not going through with the delivery of my MDX and waiting for a new Pilot instead. Not because I don't like the MDX but because the Pilot is said to be priced 5-10K cheaper.

My main reasons for selecting the MDX were 7 passenger seating and Honda reliability without having to opt for a mini-van; objectives the Honda Pilot also meets. However, the MDX is a very good value and so very nice.

I am having a difficult debate with myself whether to go with my animal desire and get the MDX or do the most rational thing and wait for the Pilot.

Does anyone have any supporting arguments (on either side) to help me make the proper decision?

Another request I forgot to add to my earlier post.......I have seen the prototype photos and spec's of the Pilot. However, that is the extent of the information that I have found available.

I am curious about paint/interior combinations, cloth vs. leather availability, etc. If anyone on this forum has access to such information would they please keep me posted?

Thanks
My guess

From what I can tell, the difference between the Pilot and todays MDX is styling and standard equipment. I imagine that fully equipped, the Pilot will be similar in features to a base MDX. Also, from what I've heard, the future MDX may be upgraded with more power and more features available, so as to further differentiate from the Pilot.

But what do I know . . . . .? I'm just a casual auto enthusiast.:p
i think if you do a search, you will find valuable info. on the Pilot. From what i have read, it seems that a loaded pilot will be $5k less than a loaded MDX with less bells and whistles. I don't like the look of the Pilot(looks too much like a CRV), but it is larger, and cheaper and has the same engine/drivetrain/tranny as the MDX.

If you wanted something that has more space than the MDX then I would definetly look at the pilot. It even offers 8 passenger seating. besides, you should not have many of the 1st year issues that plagued the Odyssey and even the MDX.

Is the Pilot really larger DIMENSIONALLY than the MDX??. From the pictures it "kinda sorta" looked a bit smaller. Maybe it's just my eyes playing tricks on me :D :D

Here are my thoughts on the styling (and these are just MY opinions)
The Honda looks more "TRUCKLIKE", but at the same time it does look a little dull (even though the basic shape is nice, clean and conservatively attractive), while the MDX looks far more "stylish" and "upscale" (more like a luxury vehicle), but by the same token it also does look a lot more "MINIVAN-ish"
from what i have read, the Pilot will be 7 inches longer than the MDX. This means it will be 196-197 inches long. The Chevy Tahoe is about the same size.
Considering the price difference there must be a substantial difference in equipment. If you think you will be getting the same level of equipment I'm sure you are mistaken. Probably will be like the VW Passat GLX v.s. the Audi A6. They are similar BUT you get many more bells and whistles with the Audi. Both are very nice but the Audi is better. I'm sure there will be the same relationship between the Pilot and the MDX.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
Honda Pilot alternative

If what you really want is a well equipped, 7 seater, reliable SUV now, thats cheaper than an MDX, then go get a Toyota Sequoia

Seems to meet your specs without the wait
Re: MDX vs. Pilot

I may be way off base, but I suspect that as far as comparing the bells/whistles/features/etc (Acura vs Honda) of the MDX and the Pilot there will be similar relationship as there is between the TL and the Accord.
Touring sans Roof Rack ??

msu79gt82: Did I read right -- Touring w/o Roof rack? If so, what was necessary to remove rack and not leave holes in the roof? We have a Touring and I have thought about removing the rack [we'll never use it] expecting that it will somewhat quieter with the roof open. Will appreciate comments ....

srpbep,

Removing the roof rack will not leave any holes in the MDX roof. The rack is mounted on studs located in the roof channels. Once you remove the roof rack you will need new channel moldings that snap into the channels (to replace segmented molding that was cut to accomodate the roof rack).

You can look at Roof Rack Installation Instructions for MDX to get a better idea of the removal process.

mgmdx ... a long overdue thank you ... the instructions do make the process quite clear ... Steven
