Just look at the results. For many of us that ordered the MDX before the test was conducted, we are just happy to see Honda is doing a great job on this car.

These results would be very encouraging except that the MDX was lumped with the Explorer.
The MDX still did slightly better than the Explorer, and was the 2nd best at this particular test overall in the SUV's the IIHS has tested. Only the BMW X5 did better than the MDX in the test, and the difference there is even smaller (you have to go to the various injury measure stats to see, plus the head restraints of the X5's are better than the MDX's).

The first IIHS test of the Ford Explorer did not produce a good result at all. IIHS allows companies to do a mulligan, make design changes, and come back with a new production unit later on. I bet that's a lot of comfort to folks who own the pre-improved Explorer/Mountaineer that didn't do well in the IIHS test (the rumor is that it only scored "marginal" overall). The MDX got it right, the first time.

Special safety features Explorers and Mountaineers manufactured after October 2001 include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal offset crashes. (Note: Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door.)
Please keep in mind that the 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer model year started much earlier than October.

At least they did better than the new GM SUV's, including the "SUV of the Year" Envoy which scored only a marginal.
