I finally made it by to get the wood steering put on today that I paid for back about a month ago. Well - first thing is that they only had the one that went with the tan interior and I have ebony. They apologized and said the box wasn't labled correctly - ordered another. Things happen. What I really wanted to mention was..

I'd just noticed this past week a couple of inches alone the edge of the passenger door a thin line of rough loking/feeling surface. You can't see it easily until the sun hits it just right. I asked them to see if they could get this out thinking it was probably glue from shipping ( where they put stuff on the vehicle to protect it). The service guy though the same thing.

Now they say it seems to be in the paint. They'll look more at it when I come back for the steering wheel installation...but they may have to do some "paint work". I've never had a dealer do "paint work". Only a body/paint shop. I just wonder if anyone else has had a similar type situation and if their experience was that dealers can handle this, it'll be un-noticeable etc. Anyway - a little concerned - but not overly.

That rough area in your paint, if along the bottom of the door, could be the infamous 'orange peel' effect I read about in some other car forums. This was said to be done purposely to a car in order to hide everything from scratches to dings from road debris as you drive your car more and more. Not sure if this was ever talked about here. A lot of people expressed dissapointment about it, but ultimately, didn't become too much of a issue.

rscottf -- bummer on the paint. Did you try WD40 or claybar to see if it's a surface contaminant rather than embedded? If it's embedded, they probably wetsand and buff/polish. Not too difficult but a shop dedicated to paintwork would prolly be better than a (potential) dealer hack.

Aiya -- I know the intentionally-textured paint on lower panels you're talking about. I can't recall the term for it, but you're right - it is meant to be a bit more durable and forgiving from chips and stuff.

However, that's different than orange peel...orange peel is unintentional and varies color-to-color and manufacturer-to-manufacturer. Generally less OP = better quality paint and better painting technique. Pretty much all cars today have OP to some extent, tho some are worse than others. Here's what orange peel looks like:

I'll really question what they're going to do. It is in fact some paint flaw. I had claybarred (sp?) just last weekend. It does feel embedded. It's is only an inch to inch and a half. Everybody wouldn't notice...but I do

I should know more this week...the accessory ( I'd already paid for w/ the MDX ) is expected Thursday...

Well, if they break out the sandpaper first, be sure you're standing close enough to stop them

Just how rough is it? Typically, you want to attack these things with the least-abrasive stuff first, then move up the ladder.

A 3M product like Finesse It II is reaonably tame (i'm just guessing that 3M scratch'n'swirl remover is gonna be too mild) -- it might not knock down all the roughness (depending on how bad it is) but it might shine it up enough to not notice...

I tried to take a pic. ( don't have a digital camera so it's hard) had to wait 'til I got home when it was light and not raining etc. like early in the week.

Anyway - thanks for the replies. I didn't make it back to the dealer because 1st if was Thursday for the wood steering wheel to come in, now it's Monday
