In another thread back on 1/4/02, I posted a statement saying how I was having to concentrate on keeping my speed down so I didn't get my first speeding ticket.

Well it happened today. 80 in a 65. Albeit, I wasn't cruising at that speed, he caught me coasting off a hill. What sucks was that I had 15min earlier turned the cruise control off because I was tired of being passed by other drivers. I briefly thought about pleading my case ("I'm still adjusting to the speed in this thing......"It's my first ticket.....", "I'm usually careful....", "I was on a hill..."), but being 5 days from the end of the month, I knew it'd be a waste of breath. Besides, when I told him it was my first time ever being pulled over, he smiled and gave me an incredulous look....so I got the feeling he was gonna enjoy this ticket.

Oh well, I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

So be forewarned----- this thing is fast!!!

Dana,
Sorry to hear about your speeding ticket, if you have the time it may be worth going to court, with no previous record they will probably work some kind of deal. Get a radar detector, they are inexpensive, and you dont have to think about it.

..........but here in L.A. almost everyone INCLUDING THE COPS are driving AT LEAST 75-80mph on the local 65mph freeways. Once ouside the "city-limits" the speed limit becomes 70mph and almost everyone is going 85-90mph. I think the cops in Southern California must be the most tolerant!!!! or they're just plain old lazy :D , cause if they wrote tickets for 80 in a 65, pretty much EVERYONE would get a ticket!! :D

I had the very same problem with my 3.2TL. The car was just beginning to "wake-up" at 75, begging to be really driven.......like RGWomack mentioned, a good Radar detector which includes X, K and Ka band radar as well as laser detection might be the answer!!.......you can check out the "Great radar detector test" in the recent Car and Driver issue

Dana,

I suspect that the Valentine One would be the only detector worth having, from what I've read. Just don't ever let a Virginia cop catch you with a detector!

When I'm in a hilly area, and don't want to coast down a hill too fast, I put the transmission into D4; it does a good job of holding the car back, and has saved me a ticket more than once.

Hope you get a judge who's a Tar Heel!

defensive driving...

Dana,

Not sure if you can do it in NY, but here in Texas, we can take a defensive driving class and get the ticket dismissed...

it used to be a painful 6 hour class u have to go somewhere and take. Now we can even take it online at defensivedriver.com or is it defensivedriving.com.

Some I know REALLY ;) well just finished it this morning at 5AM since the 6 months to take it is about up. I (ops, that person) think it is much better to take it online since u can do it just 15-30 minutes at a time or do the whole thing in one swoop...

frostyra, u're right. The V1 is the only one to get. I know that some reviews really likes the 8500 or the Bel models, but there is NOTHING like having the directional display.

Sorry to hear about your ticket Dana.

My wife has been pulled over in 'X for speeding. She tried the usual excuses but none of them worked.

regarding Valentine 1- I believe that it has VG-2 protection. i.e. it cannot be detected by radar detector detector(got that). But, if you have it sticking on the windshield, it would be hard to miss it.

Having had four tickets just for the last 3 years, I finally decided to get a radar detector. After 2 days of research I chose V1 over the others and got it about one month ago. It has saved me 4 (four!) sure tickets since then and made me aware of numerous other speed traps. It's probably one of my best investments lately and it has already paid for itself. Do your research, choose the one that suits you best and go for it, you won't regret it!

ubik

PS The scramblers/jammers might seem attractive but they don't work, forget about them!
Hope that helps.

To Speed or Not to Speed

I see 3 ways to prevent future problems:

(1) Slow down driving the MDX.

(2) Get a radar detector.

(3) Move to state like CA [see previous post].

I think that (1) is the only option that doesn't make any sense so you've either got to buy a detector, move, or buy a detector and move.

Well I've always prided myself on being 30 y.o., with no tickets. But since my boyfriend lives 2hrs up the interstate that I got the ticket on, and I travel that road at least once a week and I now know cops have their little hiding spots on that road, I am seriously considering the V1. Seems like it would be a worthwhile investment. Until then I'll be cruising at 65-70 from now on.

Thanks!

valentine detector

Have to buy from Mr Valentine himself, he backs and updates his detectors as technology changes. It is worth the cost and blows away the competition!!!!:D
