My parents want a new car like my MDX but since we already have one they want something different. I know Honda will come out with the Pilot sometime and charge whatever they want for it. I need a quality SUV with 7 passenger seating and decent gas mileage. What else is out there?

How long can they wait?

And how much do they want to spend?

Seriously, from the Pilot (this summer) to the Volvo XC90 (this fall) to the 2003/2004? Lexus RX300, to the Chrysler Pacifica (early next year) to the Mercedes-Benz GST (early 2004) there will be plenty of attempts to knock the MDX off its (7 passenger Luxury SUV like) throne. We just don't know how good they will be or how much they will cost.

In the here and now (are your sure they can't wait for the Pilot?), there is always the Buick Rendezvous (....or maybe they want to look at the Odyssey instead :) ). If they want to go larger there is always the Sequoia (or, gulp, the Explorer or Trailblazer Ext). If they want to go smaller....ummm....ok, the Suzuki Grand Vitara Xl-7. But as you see, we move further and further from the sweet-spot that the MDX holds. (OK, how about an MDX of a different color w/o the roof rack? That would look different ;) )

MDX that isnt MDX

How 'bout a Ford Explorer?. Safety ratings are much improved on the new one. (Of course, they couldn't get worse)

But seriously, it's probably about the best all-around sport-ute that seats 7 and isn't too big for $30K-ish. OK, it's no MDX, but at least you can get a decent deal on it. A good alternative to the GMC Envoy, which only seats 5 unless you want to wait a few months for the extended version.

If you can wait a couple of months and want something big , Ford is about to replace the Expedition with a new model. There should be a review in any of this month's car mags.

The question I'd ask is whether the need to be different is more powerful than the need for the best SUV?

I feel the same way. If you love the MDX and it's the right choice for you, why would you buy something else that you're going to be less happy with just for the sake of having something different? Just get a different color MDX and you'll have the best of all worlds!

Hey all,

Personally, i think the Honda Pilot is an excellent choice. Quality issues should be gone since it is not a brand new model. It would be my favorite choice for your parents, based on room, safety, quality, reliability, and performance.

Other choices have been mentioned. I kinda always like the GMC Envoy for some odd reason...maybe the engine attracts me.

I never warmed up to the Explorer...the interior is just plain cheap! The exterior is attractive...however, the rear suspension is a horrible design (for me)!

Another possible choice is the upcoming redesign 4Runner, which should have as much room as the GX470 (8 people). The next generation RX is not going to be redesigned within THIS year...maybe mid- or late 2003. I heard the 4Runner is coming out this fall.

Thanks.

Get the MDX

I went through the same thought process about 6 months back. My brother had an MDX. I wanted something different just to be different. After researching other cars, there was just nothing better out there.

What did I do? Since my brother had the Mahogany, I got the silver, threw in some accessories he DIDN'T have, and now I love it when people say, "Yours looks better than your brother's!" I rub it in to him all the time.

I think the Oddysey may be your best bet. I also like the future Ute suggestions (Pilot, Volvo, etc.)

The Envoy and Rendevous come to mind, but they are GM POC's that are somewhat mediocre in capabilities and will probably give you unneeded headaches. (recalls, service, more recalls . . .)

I think your parents should consider another color MDX if they like yours. In my opinion there isn't another vehicle available at the current moment similair to the X, that's why we brought them.

Other considerations are the Honda Pilot, Lexus GX-470 which is due out next year or the slightly bigger Toyota Sequia.

I don't think the American SUV's have the quality of the foreign SUV's.

Good Luck

I'm surprised that no one else has yet mentioned the Toyota Highlander, which is an excellent vehicle. Fully loaded, The Highlander is slightly less in cost than the Base MDX. For some, the slightly smaller size of the Highlander is a negative, but for others it is a plus.

B/C erikp specifically asked for 7 passenger seating.

I test drove a Volvo XC70 (the current model) and certainly wouldn't consider it a '7 passenger SUV'. It does have cargo space similar to the MDX, although the shape of the cargo box doesn't meet my needs as well as the MDX. However, the 3rd seat option is a joke  . Even a child would have trouble finding a place for his feet, and there is no way an adult could sit back there. It reminded me a lot of the rear seats on the Taurus wagon. I doubt if they will be able to improve it much in the XC90 because of the vehicle form factor.

..the closest choice is still MDX..

A qualilty SUB with 7 passenger can mean a few choices, even the old-style MB with 7 seat option could be a choice for older people. Just don't plan to move the seat much. However, MDX is gas friendly due to its intelligent design of computerized four wheel drive. Overall, MDX as a whole package is hard to beat,

erikp,

Do you love your MDX? Wasn't it the best for you out there?

Do you love your mother & father? Don't you want the best for them?

Solutions:

(1) Give them your MDX and you settle for 2nd choice.

(2) Everybody gets the best [move over, 2nd MDX on its way!!].

How about an ML320?

Hey look, I have a 6 month old ML320. Why don't you buy mine and I'll get another MDX...

My parents got an ML320 last year and said that the MDX is a SUV for "younger" people; however, they sure do like to drive my MDX when they get the chance.

how about a Land Rover Disco II with jump seats. Would be WAAAAY different than the MDX. i.e. it is unreliable, boxy, rough riding, poor handling, has no power, gas guzzler, old world technology. but, it sure has prestige;) , and best of all it sits 7.

allright enuff sarcasm, like everybody said- go with a pilot, or a different colored 'X.

ooooh, i thought of another reason why the Disco II is the polar opposite of the MDX. It came dead last in the Designer Sport Ute comparison in C & D( the MDX came in 1st).:D :D :D
