First oil change - when to have it completed?

Hi all,

I did search, but didn't find anything conclusive.

The dealer stated 7500 miles would be oil change #1. Just want to know if that is correct or if i should have it done sooner?

Thanks!

Depend on the driving condition. My first one was around 8700.
Follow your MM unless you drive in harsh conditions or tow in which case you do it sooner. Depending on your driving style the MM will adjust. At minimum once a year though regardless of miles.
Your Maintenance reminder should notify your at 15% when your first oil change is due around +/- 9000 miles. It should be an "A1" notification (oil change, tire rotation). You can change it sooner; but, the MDX is 100% fine with the 8500-9500 mile oil change intervals.

Side Note: Many owners changed to full syn oil after the first oil change. I only use syn oil because I keep my vehicles +10 years and +150,000 miles. I purchase the oil locally and take to the Acura dealership for the oil change.

Nice! It's very rare for dealers to let customers bring their own parts/fluids.

I think the normal oil for Acura 3.5L is an oil blend. Acura usually charges a lot more for their full syn oil. I can usually get a jug of Mobil 1 for around $24-$26 and Acura charges me about $36 for labor, oil filter, and any other inspections due. I do my rotations/balance with Discount Tires.
Read the owner manual.

It'll tell you to use the Maintenance Minder (MM) display as the indicator of when to change the oil. The oil change trigger isn't based purely on mileage - it's based on a combo of mileage and how the vehicle was driven. You can see and predict it based on the display of 'oil life remaining' where it starts out at 100% and works its way down to 0% (at roughly 10% per 10K miles for mostly freeway miles).

Your dealer should have told you the above rather than to say 'at 7500 miles' although the 7500 -9000 mile point is probably pretty close to when it'll need to be changed. There's actually a range where it can be changed as indicated in the owner manual - at 15% life left do the oil change soon and if it hits 5% do it right away.

It's always best to read the owner manual rather than to ask the opinions of random people, especially when it comes to oil change intervals where people have wildly differing opinions based on subjectivity and sometimes outdated practices - like saying it always needs to be done at 5K miles because that's what they've done for all their cars, or at 3K miles because that's what their father told them to do back in 1968.

Thanks all. Just wanted to be sure we didn't need a change at ~500 miles or so. I'll keep an eye on MM. My last car was 10k/1-year changes with synthetic, so i plan on doing similar with the MDX.

Waiting for some shade-tree mechanic to come on here and talk about how you should do a 500 mile change to "get rid of all the metal shavings" from the cylinder break-in......

I dumped the initial oil with any shavings after 1000 miles, you guys do you.

Cool

Then there is usually the discussion about whether the OEM factory fill oil is "different" and contains heaps of "moly" or whatever to help with a break in and so you aren't supposed to get rid of it right away. Although my guess is that they just use normal 0W-20 oil or whatever

They use regular oil to fill the pan but there are break in oils used on the parts during assembly. Each engine is tested before it leaves the factory but they don't change the oil between testing so it still has break in lube mixed with the regular oil.

Ditto on the full syn, 10+ years (16 yrs for the '06 MDX) and Discount Tire. Same here. Too funny.

And, I definitely was/am old school when it comes to oil changes. I changed the oil every 3,750 using full synth (typically Mobile 1) on the '06. Probably severe overkill, waste of money, and environmentally irresponsible but, at 154K when I sold it, I would have jumped in and driven from MI to CA without hesitation. Ran perfectly for 16 years. Of course, other maintenance practices were similar.

Good to know the MM is reliable and can be trusted. I'll move forward from '68. ;)

My rig has 6500 miles and I have 30% oil life. So probably the 7500 is right.
I couldn't get a direct answer from my dealer so I searched and found this WIW I was looking for: Acura MDX Maintenance Schedule | AutoNation Acura South Bay

I did my first at 5000km (70%oil life) but didn’t reset minder
After winter
Wanted fresh oil in the car
And it’s cheap
So who cares :)
Now I can put it in sports plus mode
Nehhhhhh
Still too chicken

Air filter also cheap...after 3000 miles why not
If you are doing accelerated intervals, watch the latter part of this video.

If I told you, probably just argue with me, but maybe the video can help you.
Hello. I'm planning to change my oil on my own without resetting my maintenance reminder at 1000 miles. I'm also going to use Mobile 1.
I'm planning to keep this car for a long time.

I know the following video is for a Toyota but he gives out some good advice for pretty much all the cars as a professional mechanic. Check it out.
