You should be more concerned with safety and what may overload the electrical system, than what effect it will have on performance, which in most cases is negligible. Yes, heavy electrical loads do translate to more parasitic losses in the alternator, but they are quite small.
HIDs actually draw less current than stock bulbs after the initial turn on.
