I know it's a seller's market, what with month-long waiting lists & MDXs selling at MSRP, but I thought I could at least deal on accessories...

-Dealer wouldn't match Tim's special on side steps back in August
-Finally taking delivery next week; asked about getting net & liner thrown in. Answer = NO
-Asked about getting labor on SS installation thrown in. Answer = NO

Needless to say, I'm calling Tim in the AM!!

This is the kind of attitude of most Acura dealers. Just get the car from them and get the rest from Tim. I wish Tim could ship the MDXs from his store :)

Tim CAN ship 'Xs!!!

GCK: I believe that Tim can indeed ship entire cars. I know he offered to ship me one, and I recall a post where Tim discussed sending an 'X to someone in California.

Tim's number is 888-RAY-LAKS. Call him!

Thanks for the suggestion. Had I not bought mine already, I would have considered it.

I just got my accessories from Tim... can't do much with them until weekend, and we do not have a lot of it before the next storm kicks in.

%$^# the dealer

i tried the same for the heck of it, and the dealer put me on hold for a minute (obviously to laugh with their buddies). he came back after about a minute and said, "i'm sorry. we can't discount the accessories". needless to say, tim was great to talk to and gracious enough to send out my BSM and running boards even though it sounded like he had way too much on his plate. how can you beat next day delivery at your front door! plus tim's great prices, including shipping and no tax.

the only problem i have now is that i have a set of redrock BSM (which are beautiful in their own right) and a pair of running boards. hmmmm... something seems to be missing. yeah right, there's no x to attach them to. dealer called last night to inform me that the driver needed directions from niagra falls to the dealer. he guaranteed a friday delivery to me. but based on the "don't pick it up at night" rule, we will pick it up saturday morning (45degrees and sunny/cloudy forecast). the salesman told me that most of the paperwork is done and being really decent overall (other than no discount on squat, except $500 off MSRP).

I wouldn't be complaining

I wouldn't be complaining about no discount on accessories if you got 500 off MSRP. How'd you manage that, anyway?

Be careful - they might try to push for Friday delivery - since that's the 30th - they'll want to get ANOTHER sale into the month of November... if it comes to that - push them for some freebies..

Right

Right -- Tim sells everything for a loss. Every sale he makes he goes actually more broke.

That kind of argument would be enough for me to go off on the guy.

Well, the wait is about over!! I used the same dealer, and when I asked for a discount on accessories from the sales manager, he said he sells them at "cost". When I got specific prices, they were much higher than Tim, so it was I who laughed :D

Our parts department will not discount much either or at least compete with Tim's prices on accessories. Part of the problem is their monthly bonuses are based on profit percentages on their total sales. If profit percentage falls below a certain point they don't get their bonuses. I don't agree with the system inplace at our store, but I understand why they are unwilling to compete with Tim on prices. We have employees families going to Tim for accessories, and all have been very satisfied. I just don't understand it?

Best I could do

The best I could talk my dealer into doing was matching the acura.com price for accessories. This was actually not as easy as it should have been -- there was about a $200 difference between the Acura.com price and their price for the boards or steps.

This price is still more expensive than Tim, however, and Running boards seem easy enough to install, but I think I'm going to lease the MDX, and the boards are leasable, so it actually works out to be within $10 of Tim's price if I add the increase in payment x the length of the lease (even including the additionaly Lux tax, etc) Towing package I think is also included in the lease as a depreciable option.

All of the other stuff (non leasable options) like mats and TG deflector I will be getting from Tim and not even deal with them.

You can include anything.

You can include all accessories in your lease, but some are more advantageous to do so than others.

Your lease payments are made up of the difference between the purchase price and the residual price. The residual price is the projected value of the var at the end of the lease. It is a percentage of the MSRP of the car.

For example, for a 39 month lease, the residual is around 60% of the MSRP. However, only some options are residualized. Lets say you buy a touring + nav for 40K - the residual would be 24,000 (60%). So the full amount of the lease is 16,000 (40-24).

If you added running boards for $600 from the dealer, they are residualized, so you would pay for 40% of the value of the boards over the course of the lease ($240), and the other 60% of the value of the boards would be included in the lease end amount. Other options, however - IE tailgate deflector, are not residualized -- they are added to the MSRP price, but not included in the lease end amount -- essentially, you will pay for the full value of those options over the course of the lease, as opposed to just the value 'used' during the lease term.

Hope this makes sense.

Davegood's right. One other note: residuals on the car itself and accessories (including which ones can be residualized) vary from lender to lender.

I ended up leasing my GS through MB rather than Lexus b/c the residuals in general were higher, and they actually residualized more accessories than Lexus did. Go figure.

I took my printout of Tim's prices into my local dealer here in Portland, they couldn't come close to matching it. After I picked myself up off the floor from laughing, they said that I would pay the difference in shipping, I laughed some more. I gave them one more chance to take at least 2k of my hard earned money and they declined, They said it was against Oregon Law to charge less than the Sales Dept.. If Sales charges MSRP, then Parts is required to charge MSRP. I've never heard of this before. Roger, please enlighten me if this is true.
After laughing my way out the door, I promptly came home and ordered several Christmas presents from Tim for my wife's 'X that isn't even here yet.

Bottom Line

Bottom line -- you'll never beat Tim's prices -- the best you can hope for is to match them. Better off just getting them from Tim even if you do get it matched. I always like to give my business to people that help me out.

Besides, the dealer made enough already....

You know I'm starting to feel real bad about my MDX deal. I paid $200 over invoice, and had all the additions installed at the dealer for 10% over their cost...side steps, rear splash guards, rear deflector, visor, wood leather steering wheel, meter trim, front and side lower trim. Received 5% simple interest 60 month financing to boot from my Credit Union! Is there a problem getting a good deal on an MDX?
