...everyone had a great time and no one got arrested! :p Here are a few teaser pics of the off-roading segment. Kid Flavor had to leave his lowered 'V behind, but got to ride with Varmint. I will try to put together a full pictorial later (we took tons of great pics) but these will have to do for now (just got home and it's very late, yawn). Thanks again to Tim at http://www.hondacuraworld.com for donating the great prizes :)

Hey all,

Yup, it was pretty fun! GG did a great job organizing it...despite the little oops in directions! :)

The trail wasn't very difficult...however, with us were some 1st timers in off-roading. You know, we DO want them to come back next year! Don't want to scare them to death.

I am sure a car with decent ground clearance could have driven the trail...but that was NOT the point of this whole trip. It is all about fun among good people in our vehicles.

I am sure jastevenson's Miata is a fine little "cute" vehicle...looks good with a blond GIRL driving it! But, frankly, speaking, isn't there a Toyota Spyder forum somewhere you can buzz to?? That is where YOU should tell everyone how subpar your Miata is around corners compared to a Spyder!

Thanks and come again, jastevenson!

Wow, you must have an inferiority complex or something. Perhaps it's cause you drive a dinky CRV (aka, civic). The Miata is a sports car, and every car magazine agrees that it is the best sports car under 30k.

As the owner of an MDX and a Miata, I can tell you that the Miata is way more fun to drive. I like the MDX b/c it is much more roomy.

If you're not too incompetent, try learning how to drive a stick shift, buy a miata, and take it to the track like me. You'll have way more fun that in your civic...er...crv.

No offense, but I wouldn't call any car with less than 150 hp a "sports car" :p Even the 1st gen "dinky CR-V" as you so politely put it has more horsepower and torque :D If you wanted a 4 cyl sports car you should have gotten an S2000 IMHO.

As for the off-roading, Thai is correct. I specifically picked out these trails because they would be EASY, fun and memorable for first timers. Judging by the comments of everyone it worked out perfectly :) Although it was what I would consider to be "light off-roading," even a miata equipped with optional LSD would not have made it through in one piece IMO due to lack of ground clearance and the patches of sugar sand we encountered. But I'd love to go back next weekend and watch you try :p

I'm amazed

I can't believe there are people out there who will admit to owning a Miata, much less extoll it's virtues as a "sports car"...

jastevenson,

Inferiority complex? Geez, a Miata owner (WTF?!) coming to a MDX forum to proclaim the Miata's sportiness??!! Hmm, did you take the wrong turn or something??

A few lessons here to teach you about automobiles...
Lesson #1: Acura MDX = Sport Utility Vehicle; Honda CRV = mini-SUV

Lesson #2: Mazda Miata = ragtop car

Lesson #3: Toyota Spyder runs circles around the Miata...actually make that many circles...you WANT a true sports convertible under $30K, get a Spyder (the definition of a true cheap sporty ragtop!) or the Honda S2000...you want a pretty-boy/girl convertible with nice "curves," get a Miata!

What is on your Miata? For sure being a track guy, i hope you have the JacksonRacing supercharger, right? For sure, you opted for the Bilstein shocks in the LS model. Oh wait, last check, Mazda is still confused about the HP ratings! What is it now? Did they pull a "Ford"?! (Remember the Cobra....)

I am actually proud of my CRV...it has taken a lot of punishment (for sure more than you have ever seen), but keeps on ticking...rattle-free after 90,000 miles of punishment!

Thanks...jastevenson, before posting next time, take a look at the mirror, and repeat to yourself, "Please let me not be an idiot on any forums i go to today." It will carry you far....

To quote from the editor of Edmunds.com, an unbiased source of automotive journalism:

"Despite a price tag that rises to the mid-20s without leather, the 1999 Miata still undercuts a similarly-speced BMW Z3 1.9 by thousands of dollars, and is more fun to drive. Nothing matches the Miata driving experience at this price point, and you Camaro/Firebird/Mustang motorheads had better drive the Mazda before writing in to complain. Once upon a time I considered the Miata to be a Barbiemobile, too. Now one is parked in my garage. So zip it. Horsepower isn't everything. "

If the Editor of Edmunds, who has driven countless cars, thinks it's the best car for the money, perhaps you and your Civic simply don't know what you're missing.

As an MDX owner (edited by TheWorm), I know the MDX is the best vehicle in it's respective class. I'd rather have a BMW X5 M, but it's $68k, and at that price it's not worth it. Sure, I could have bought an S2k, but for my weekend car the Miata beats it hands down. Sports care are supposed to be light, and the S2k is too heavy. The MR2, meanwhile, is ugly and wasn't avail when I bought.

My recommendation is that you:
1) (edited by TheWorm)
2) Get a life.
3) Buy a Miata. It's lots of fun, and makes a great second car. The MR2 and S2k are also wonderful, but my own personal preference is for the miata. (edited by TheWorm)

Thanks for listening!
:) :)

No such thing exists, least of all Edmunds IMO.

You'll note that I edited your previous post. Please refrain from personal attacks, especially those that might be viewed by innocent bystanders as offensive, inappropriate, or both.

If you've reviewed other posts here, you've no doubt noticed that the Mods allow a great deal of latitude in posting opinions, flame-bait, and retorts. Please make an effort to keep right of the double-yellow line.

I'll leave it to others to comment on the way you've chosen to introduce yourself to us.

I seem to have a knack for bringing out the best in people :p Seiously though, the miata is a great little car. In fact, if mazda offered it with a remote control I might even be interested in getting one for GG Jr. :D

jastevenson,

Well, as you quoted, the Edmunds' reviewer said those things in '99. The big question is, will he/she say it now that the Spyder is out.

Some say the Spyder is ugly...some say it is purpose-built. In the end, if you want a sporty roadster under $30k, you get a Spyder. If you want the ultimate roadster, get a S2000. Miata is more for cruising.

Automobile journalists are subjective people. They are writers first that then became interested in cars...some are forced into it. If you are a car nut (like i am), you will notice that these car "enthusiasts" are frequently WRONG, even in the objective parts! Until there is a college degree in AUTOMOTIVE NUT, i will not base all my opinions on ONE article! That is just plain nuts! :)

Personally, i HAVE a life...remember, i went off-roading with friends this past weekend!

It is unfortunate that you did not take my advice before....

Oh yeah, BMW X5 has an M-version??!! I thought it was just the 4.6-version coming soon.

Finally, WHY ARE YOU HERE ON THIS FORUM???

Man, there is no need to get angry...this is all for fun, man!

Thanks...and do NOT come again! (Sarcasm has no effect on this guy!)

TheWorm,

You held it in check beautifully. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, they don't necessarily have the right to jam them down the throats of the unsuspecting...

GatorGreg,

Any more pictures yet?

Uh Thai, Mrs. GG says the fact that I went off-roading this past weekend with a bunch of people I met on the internet is proof that I have NO life :p

He claims he owns an MDX, but I am skeptical. It takes most forum members at least a week before they get edited by The Worm :D

BTW Thai, where were you when I snapped the second pic above

Welcome to the group jastevenson. A go cart could run that trail as much as your Miata but that's not the point.
Your Miata will do better in the track than your MDX but that "MDX SUV could run that track.  ".

Get the point?

Now if you can't get it, print and read the above paragraph ten times until it sinks in. Then come back here with your views about your new MDX because the best firsthand info in my opinion about MDX can be found here.

Hey frostyra, yes I've got lots of great video and pics. Some beautiful shots of the group posing by a lake at the golf course and at the beach climbing dunes, etc. I will try to post some more soon...

defending jastevenson?

Jastevenson,

I think you got it just right! The CRV is a toy that is not even worthy of even being called a Civic, the S2000 is definitely not as cool as your great Miata. The spyder is just another ugly little car and you have a MDX. We all agree with you. You are right.

Maybe u can take your insights over to the CRV forum. I'm sure that they would love to hear your thoughts about their CRV. It should be interesting reading.

OK, now can we let Gatorgreg post the rest of the pictures that some of us actually want to see??? :) u know, the original purpose of this thread?

(Gatorgreg, can we see more pics now? :D by the way, I think they do have a RC Miata, but they probably make a 12V CRV that little gator can actually ride in!)

First of all great pics Greg! These roads are rougher than any place I’d likely take my MDX. I came back from Tahoe this weekend and although there was no snow on the road, I was looking for any pile of snow or patch of ice I could drive over. The drive through the twisties was also fun. Post more pics.

Why wouldn’t you expect anyone to be offended by this? This is an MDX forum! Doesn’t anyone think before they talk/write? I have a Miata and I don’t think it would likely make it through that terrain.
I would challenge jastesvenson to go through that course with his Miata. I’d be pretty interested in the results. He would probably need to be pulled out by a CR-V.
Calling the CR-V a Civic is like called the MDX an Odyssey. We know they are not the same!

The S2000 is a great car – love to have one. The Spyder is also a great car and very comparable to the miata. But we all know the effects of supply and demand. I got my miata in 91 when it was undoubtedly the best sports car for the price. Not all of us need the best - Just what suits us. And someday there will be a time when a better SUV will comes around. :( Some of us will switch over; some of us will keep our existing MDX.
I don’t need to explain why the Miata is a great car. To me, there are hundreds of reasons and I can go on forever. And it truly does complement my MDX. For those of you who don’t think the Miata is a great sports car, don’t know the Miata or don’t much about cars. If you think is just for cruising haven’t ridden with me. The only time I’m cruising in my Miata is in traffic or with my wife.
Please don’t bash the Miata, it’s personal to me. Finally, don’t stereotype Miata owners because of this one comment. There are a lot of us out there. NO OFFENSE, but we are not all “blonde women”. :D

Alas, GG Jr. has already crossed over to the "dark side" aka Jeep :p I will try to post some more pictures tonight.

Emerald, you make a good point about not all miata drivers being blonde women. One of my old co-workers drove one and he was the exact opposite :p I went to lunch with him in it one day and that was the first and last time I ever rode in a miata. He loved his miata but I never got used to the feeling that I was about to be squashed by a truck at any moment.
