I recently had my first check up and was informed that the dealer will only change the oil and not the filter. I would definitely reccommend that you guys pay for the filter if you have to. There could be small metal pieces from engine during break-in and I believe they need to be removed. I actually broke my vehicle in for the first 1000 miles under 55 miles per hour and alternated the rpms when driving. I had my first check up at 3000 miles and have them change oil and filter. I plan to follow a 3 month 3000 mile interval for oil changes. I will make sure to do the 7500 real axle fluid which everyone says is so importment to keep up with also. I was shocked to find out about no oil filter on first check up:D

I received a coupon from my dealer for a free oil & filter change at 3 months or 3750 miles. I am going to have it changed next week, so I will be sure to check that the filter is changed.

Thanks for the "heads up"

Please check your manual first!!!

Recommended 1st oil change is at 7500 miles. Oil from the factory has some kind of special blend to aid in proper break-in of the engine.

I know that 7500 is quite too high of a mileage so just to be safe, you can have the first oil change at around 5000. That's what I did to my first 'X' and I will also do the same to my current 'X'.

Just my 2 cents.

7500 mile oil change may vary

In the northeast my dealer siad reccommended is 3750 for break in. You are correct that there are certain break in items in oil but can change and acura recommends changes based on the area you live it is possible for 7500, but in my opinion the break in is done after 3000 miles. I believe it is important to break in for the firat 1000 miles by going under 55 miles per haour and varying rpm's is most important for the break in oil to take effect. I was able to get a free oil change coupon from dealer which I had to use by 2/14/02 so figured I use this for my 3000 oil change, then at 4000 miles I will do my first check up which will only replace the oil no the filter, which I will pay for myself(no sense in changing oil if don't do filter), then i will follow up at the 7500 for next complete oil change and rear axle fluid. Going forward I will follow the 3000 miles or three months for oil changes. Take it from someone who has engine specialists in the family and have seen the inside of upward 3000-5000 engines, do the oil changes it makes a big difference down the road on the longivity and power of the engine. Think od it as the blood line of your car, and for $24.95 at most it's worth the piece of mind. Once you abuse the engine with lack of fresh oil you cannot go back!!:D

Regarding oil-filter change,One dealer says around 4000-miles and another says around 3000-miles.

Called ACURA (1-800-382-2238). She suggested me to go with MDX manual scheduled maintenence: Oil/flilter change at 7500-miles (also the original oil from factory has some ingredients).

You may refer the manual for the details.

I believe the number is 7500 which I got from Acura dealer. That is on my Acura MDX maintenance schedule.

Why would the location cause any significant difference and make some believe that at 3000 miles the breakin is done with?

Well... I'll do what Acura says.. and i am not gonna argue with them. It is an expensive item to me and I am not going to experience with it. You guy go ahead. :) And if your MDX messes up, please do write a bug report here. :p :p

Whether you go by the Normal or Severe conditions schedule, the owner's manual and service manual BOTH specify oil and filter changes together. Normal conditions specify 7500-mile/12 mo. change intervals, while Severe conditions specify 3750-mile/6 mo. change intervals. You can find places in the service manual that allow Normal service filter change at 15,000 miles or 12 mo., but DON'T short-change your engine on either oil or filter changes -- do 'em together. If you pay this much for a vehicle, it doesn't make sense to skimp on maintenance -- ever.

I'm going to stick with the recommended 7500 first oil change. Today's vehicles are better engineered than they were just a few years ago. For an example, the new GM Trailblazer, Envoy, and Bravada's first recommended oil change is 15,000 miles.

gonna wait on oil change...

Thanks to all that posted here. I have a free oil change, but am going to wait until 6 months to do it - when I do the VTM fluid change.

I checked the manual & it does say to change every 6 mo/3750 miles under SEVERE conditions. I do drive under 1 of those conditions right now- less than 5 miles per trip - and will be driving under the another soon.......over 90 degrees, which is about 6 months of the year here. (May thru October). So, depending on the part of the country you live in & the way you drive - it looks like every 12 months or every 6 months, per Acura.

After the initial oil change, I will change it every 4 months though - as I have done with all my cars. Like Paul123 posted "once you abuse the engine with lack of fresh oil yopu cannot go back"
