Hello,

I have a 2008 MDX whose B146 service light has come on. I called the dealer to get a quote and got back a figure north of $2000 ($2258 to b e exact). I have read thru the forum and am aware that this is major work (replace timing belt, water pump, etc), but is that quote reasonable? Haven't taken the car to any shop other than the dealer as long as I have owned it (even for an oil change), should I consider it? I am not a DIYer.

BTW, this is in Pleasanton, CA. Should I shop around?

Thanks a bunch for your comments/help.

2K? Lol nope....
Keep searching, Honda dealerships can also perform this service and sometimes for way cheaper than the Acura stealerships.

1. Shop Honda dealers. They have as much experience on this engine a Acura.

2. Labor rates and parts prices are usually dependent on location. In areas where real estate and wage costs are high, the dealer needs to charge more to cover his fixed expenses. If there is an area within an hour or so of you that has lower costs, you might find them cheaper. You might also be able to negotiate a free loaner car while the work is done.

3. Research: is there is a local independent Honda/Acura specialist that uses genuine parts and is experienced with the brands. Ask about ASE certification - they should have it.

At my local Acura dealer their prices would be:

B - $49.95
1 - $29.95
4 - $1,449.95 (J37)
6 - $139.95
=========
$1,668.80

Personally I think my local Acura dealer is already too expensive... So your quote is outrageous!
