Just did a road trip far from civilization. Had no cell phone coverage but was always connected to AcuraLink. Talked to the concierge a few times. I guess this is a satellite phone.

Q: Are there geographic limitations to AcuraLink The Next Generation services?

A: AcuraLink The Next Generation services work throughout the United States and Canada. However, the system must have a cellular connection to provide all the services included in a Connect or Premium subscription.
It's probably just using a different cell network than the phone you have - it also could have a more powerful antenna since it doesn't need to ride in your pocket or be placed adjacent to your head (which raises concerns about the EMF from a cell phone if against one's skull).

I guess it has 3 watts power vs 500 mw for a mobile.

Found this from 2014:

AcuraLink coverage

AcuraLink is available in the 48 contiguous United States. Currently, satellite coverage is not available in Alaska or Hawaii.
