My wife’s 14 MDX was downshifting weird. The transmission fluid had 20K miles on it so I decided to experiment and see how much fluid I could extract through the fill hole via vacuum. The answer is 2.75 quarts. The fluid looked nasty (see pic). I ordered the DW-1 fluid from Amazon ($10 per bottle). We measured out the exact amount extracted and pumped it back in (ABN transmission fluid filler $79.99 Amazon). Took all of 8 minutes or less. Will do a partial change out every 15,000 miles vs full change at 25,000 miles. Again not telling others to do this but thought you guys would find it interesting.

BTW to reset the transmission control unit, press start button twice (without turning on vehicle) and press the gas pedal for 30 seconds until the check engine light disappears. You TCU is reset and should shift smoother. No need to take it to the dealer.
Finally apologies for the jacked up photos, attempted to rotate it with little success.

You suctioned out 2.75 qts ATF through fill hole and filled through the same hole? Not sure what's the brand of fluid extractor shown, but my MityVac 7201 can pump in ATF through the same hole if I wanted. Never thought about suctioning out through fill hole. I knew there's fill hole there, but never looked up.

I always use drain hole, got slightly more than 4qts out every time. Measured what came out and filled through dipstick hole. I buy a case(12) of DW-1 from oemacuraparts.com, under $100 shipped. It's almost time to do another drain & fill 3 times.

Didn’t have ramps so I experimented with the lazy way of doing a partial fluid change. I do this on my Ram 2500 (no drain bolt on the transmission pan). The fluid was darker than expected at only 20,000 miles.

I tried to suction transmission fluid on my 2017 and couldn't get a drop of oil from the fill hole. Sometimes I wished I had the 2016. The one with a dipstick and doesn't use the $30/quart type 3.1.

I believe 2017 and 2016 have the same ZF 9 transmission, 2014 & 2015 have 6 speed AT with dipstick.
