Did you paint the mud flaps and the tailgate deflector? They look really nice. How did you do that?

Color Matched Rear Deflector and Front/Rear Mud Guards

Thanks MDXtrous:

I got them painted at my local Acura/Honda Autherized Body Shop. Spent app $200 to get them painted. It was kinda pricey due to the extra additive used on the guards. The guards are made out of a different material then the deflector. This additive was used to make the paint stick and to resist cracking and peeling since this material is more plyable. Color matching these parts on any MDX i think is a must - incredible difference.

re: Ferretti Messina Wheels

For all that have asked about the wheel - it is the Ferretti Messina 20x8.5 34mm offset. Stock MDX comes with 17x6.5 38mm offset. I did my research before i outfitted my MDX with twenty's so others wouldn't have too.

I will post close ups of the tire/wheel as resquested this weekend.

Thanks to all who have emailed so far! Keep MDXin' guys!

re: warrenty/vtm

Make no mistake. I have double checked with Acura and Acura mechanics and they reassured me that these twenty's do not effect warrenty and/or VTM or performance in any way.

Acura dealers actually love what i've done to the MDX. People have actually asked if they were an option!

Tire size and rim calculator - WebSite

For those thinking about changing rim\tire sizes and are concerned about maintaining the proper numbers here is a link that will calculate the differences to stock and speed at 60. Just plug in original size and the new size.:)

Hey Dubbed,
I like what you did and what you're planning on doing with your X. Appreciate you sharing details regarding wheel specs. I'm currently looking around the best configuration for after market wheels and really concerned how a bigger/wider wheel will fit and look. Right now I thinking of going with 19x8.5 but not sure what offset to get. Do you mind taking a picture of your wheel from the side/rear of the X, just behind the Mud flaps. I'd like to see how the tire align with the wheelwell (edge). Also, if you can, can you see how much clearance you have from the inside (i.e. Brake calipers, coil springs, etc.). You know what I'm thinking/concern right? Rubbing:(

Thanks in Advance

re: fit and finish

NaNali:

Un fortunately i cannot take those pictures you requested. I live in chicago, and have taken the wheels off so they won't see snow. However I will look for pics that show the stance that you are questioning. Re: the rubbing and the brake calipers - there is no rubbing even with the steering wheel lock to lock. There was rubbing with 265/50/20 tire that's why i opted for the 295/40/20. The 34mm offset combined with the 295 width of the wheel tire combo bring the tire practically flush with the end of the fender. Technically it's 4 mm wider which gives the MDX a wide track/agressive stance. Make no mistake this is not any application that you see on lowriders with the wheels sticking out 5 inches!!!!?!?!? This stance is in par with the X5 4.4 and especially the new 2002 X5 4.6 which come stock with twenty inch wheels. These are wide tires - remember these are twenty's not 16's!!!! I wish i took better pics of the stance so you could see how well they fit and the new stance on the MDX. For reference sake look at the stance of the BMW X5 4.4 with the upgraded 19 inch wheels. That stance is similar. MDXplosion also has twenty's, maybe you can ask him to post pics of his stance. He went with a 275/45/20 tire though. I will search for pics taken of my car and post this weekend.

Don't have the 23's yet!!!?!?!?

Nwaring:
Yes, that's the link that i used to find the best fit and finish. Stock overall diameter of 235/65/17 is 29.0 inches and the 295/40/20 is 29.3 inches. I did the research guys: i checked with Acura dealer and mechanics, verified with three different tire/wheel authorities (ie: Tire Rack, Spreewell Racing, Arandas Tire). Also note that this tire/wheel combo does not use spacers or adapters - this is the real deal.

Keep MDXin' guys!!!

Overall diameter

I also folowed all the right advice from my dealer who installed my wheels/tires (18")... the spec for the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus is:

Size: 255/55HR18 105H SL 400 A A

Overall Diameter: 28.9"
Revs per mile: 713

The stock 17's:

Size: 235/65TR17 103T SL 420 A B

Overall Diameter: 28.9"
Revs per mile: 726

The specs on your tires:

Size: 295/40YR20 106Y SL 340 A A

Overall Diameter: 29.3"
Revs per mile: NA

As you can see my tires' Revs per mile figure is 713 vs the stock 726 -- because of this my MDX's grade logic and transmission don't work correctly. My dealer couldn't feel the difference, but when we put a set of stock wheels on for a week, al the problems disappeared. The dealer felt that most peoplewouldn't be bothered by the different feel of the braking and cruising at 70mph (which is where I notice it the most)... however I did receive a letter from Acura HQ stating that my problem was due to aftermarket, non-stock wheel/tires.. even though they were added on bythe dealer I purchased the MDX from.

I've kept the wheels and tires on for now... but I am looking at a different tire/wheel combo which will keep the overall diameter and also have a closer Revs per mile value to the OEM.

I gather from your post that you don't have any grade logic (braking) or transmission problems with your combo? The braking manifests itself as engaging the brakes too soon when you actually brake or engine braking kicking in too hard when you go down a slight incline. The transmission problems I feel when I cruise at 70mph is that the engine's RPM are at 1900 with my wheels, whereas with the OEM wheels at 70mph the engine's RPM are at 2000.... which makes the MDX feel as if it's riding right between shifting positions.

Finally, even though I've had my wheels balanced twice on the super duper machine someone else posted about on this site... at speeds above 85mph I get severe shaking... curious if you've been that fast and if you get the same thing.

Thanks.

Rail,

How did you come up with those numbers? I used the calculator on miata.net and came up with:

Spec Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference

235/65-17 6.0in 14.5in 29.0in 91.2in 695 0.0%

255/55-18 5.5in 14.5in 29.0in 91.2in 694 0.1%

I've had the same 18s on for several month and 5000 miles now. I have not had any grade logic and transmission problems, at least not that I noticed. I did have some shaking problems at 75 or above until I got a reblance with a hunter 9700 (?) machine. I'll try the 70mph vs rpm test tonight and see what I have.

re: tire size

Rail and GGMDX:

I have had no problems with the 295/40/20 tire/wheel combo. and GGMdx is correct - use the Tire Size Calculator on the Miata site it's accurate.

I know i shouldn't say this but i'm taken the MDX on twenty's all the way to max mph (i believe it's limited around 110mph or so). As far as shaking and the like; it could be due to the tread of the tire as well. The Goodyear Eagle HP plus tire is a well balanced, smooth high performance tire - no problems. Actually i jus switched back to stock for the winter and the ride is very similar - didn't loose much with the after-market tire setup. 40% of 295 is still alot of tire = cushion/comfort zone....

Wish we could do test drives - i'm really curious why you had those problems. And i asked two acura dealers that i get my car serviced at and they both reassured me that everything was fine with the aftermarket wheels and that it will not harm the car or warrenty.

Regards,

Did you ever sell the rims/tires? What are you looking to get for them? Any idea on what it would cost to ship to fla?

Also, as far as speedometer problems, if you put a different size tire on, isn't there a way to recalibrate the speedo and solve your grade logic and "shifting" problems?

I know with chevys and fords hypertech makes a unit that will let you calibrate the speedo based on the tire/rear end ratio change from stock, but based on my superficial web searches I have not found such a device for the MDX. Anyone know of such a device for us?

2500k miles on 20"

I dropped the 20" wheels on the X the next day out of the dealer and I have had no problems whatsoever. No problems with the caliper, engine, speedo, etc...

The fastest I have gone on my X was just yesterday, I hit 92mph and I have to tell you it was just cruising and I was very impressed with the smoothness as well....

I dont know much about all the technical jargon as Dub does but I have been just chillin on the 20" wheels since day one without any problems.

I have attached a pic from the rear (not the best of pics). I will post more if anyone wants to see more. In this pic one can see the rear wheel and how it sits according to the wheel well.

Happy Holidays!!

deucetreMDX

jus picked my MDX from the shop and had 23's put on it, a motorized 7" screen in front, and a 13" screen in the rear, headrest screens, alpine dvd/tuner, ps2, 2 kicker amps, all mids and highs were kicker refitted, 3 solobaric subs in custom enclosure, had all my windows outfitted with one touch open/close. spent alot of dough! but well worth it. i dont know what will be next. still waitin on pics to get developed though. thought i'd get the good news out! i'm loving this MDX. i'm glad my wife talked me into getting it over the RX300. i'll be posting pics soon.
