Nice!! I like the extra sidewall to soften the ride. I'm assuming there's no problems fitting a larger tire 295/40/21 onto the stock rims? Does the extra diameter mess up the speedometer or trip computer? I wonder if 295s will cause even worse gas mileage, or if the difference is negligible.

the stick rims have no issues with the 295’s. Plenty of room and the stock rims have no issues with 295. Easily fit 305 but unsure if they fit in fender wheel that big. .

Interesting…it will cause a couple of MPH in speedo accuracy as you get above 70MPH and it will cost in fuel economy slightly too.

The tire also specs a 10-11-5” rim width and stock Type S wheels are 21 x 9.5”, so I definitely wouldn’t want to go wider than 295 that’s for sure.

Taller tire will affect cornering too, more flex due to increased sidewall height.

I'm tracking all, I was simply saying it won't be enough of an effect for me to care. The need for more sidewall is the reason I bought them. My wife rubbed the drivers side rims on a curb, if I would have had an extra 1/4" sidewall it would never have happened. That's the main reason. According to discount tire anything wider than a 295 won't fit but they are usually very conservative. I do appreciate the info and insight though.

Get that you have your reasons, that’s fair…I mostly posted for other folks that might be curious.

Did you look at similar sized tires that had a rim protector band feature in the sidewall?

I was hoping to go a bit wider myself, but thinking about going with the Michelin Pilot Sport and then adding a spare so I don’t have to do run-flats or self-sealing tires…I hate them generally speaking.

I normally love Michelin tires but the Michelin will ride rougher being more sport tuned. I had these tires on my Durango Hellcat in 21 and absolutely loved them. Usually continental have very nice wheel lips. I added the spare tire package about a month or two ago. She hammered the curb though hahahaha damn she crushed it. Not sure anything would have helped minus my truck tires.

Nah

Michelin best, better comfort and performance, but its close.
Love the review, but a personal opinion due to have Michelin and these prior. Love them both. Either way, massive upgrade over stock tire imo.
So you had the PS AS 4+ and the conti DWS 06 on the same car? Thats like 80k miles worth of tires you must do a lot of driving.
Not exact same cars but I bought over 50 cars last year during the car craze. Did some flipping and thought of keeping a few and replaced tires more than I should have. It’s just a preference for me. With a muscle car, i definitely prefer the Michelin 4s sports over conti’s sport contacts. All season I prefer conti’s.

IDK man, I'd trust the person conducting scientific tests and providing objective measurements in controlled situations. Like I said the DWS 06 are close but lets not call them "more comfortable" when objectively they are not.

Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.
Ian, wow just let it go man. Everyone has their preferences. Go buy the Michelins. You can have the last word, and I won’t reply after this one. This is my solely my opinion. I’ve driven alot of cars with different tires is all. Have a nice day.

So if I’’m reading the size and understanding, these are just wider (275 -> 295) , not taller (40->40)
so only impact would be gas mileage and nothing else.
Stock is: 275/40 R21

Edit: never mind, I see that 40 is % of the width 295.
On a related note, would 275/45 or 275/50 would provide more height without increasing width, right?

Yes, that is correct. However you really shouldnt be adding sidewall height by increasing tire size on this car. Its done on off road vehicles that have lower drive ratios.

If you want more sidewall you should downsize the wheels.

I'll be interested to see how you like the Conti DWS 06 plus over time. This is the first I have seen them on an SUV/crossover. I'm on the Mercedes forum and they are one of the top tires for a S550 sedan application (and the tire I plan to get when needed).
Just curious, did you consider the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3? They are highest rated SUV/Crossover all season tire on Tirerack.

Nate, Yeah ummmmm credible. Good info.

Ian, yeah ummmmmm maybe try decaf?

I’ve been running 20mm wider on Acura rims for 12 years, 3 different cars (2G MDX, RDX, RLX) plus my 2001 Yukon, with no problems and good results. I’ve been matching the profile to the extra width to keep the speedometer and odometer true. But I don’t mind going a little taller at first …. Because when any new tire wears down from new 11/32” to mid-life 7/32” the speedometer is also affected in opposite direction of the original taller tire.

Have been wondering what I’ll do w my MDX -S but for now plan to keep the OEM till they wear down. I surely will go 10mm wider but probably keep same 40 profile. IMO it’s always a good idea to go at least 10mm wider. One day I might need the incremental rubber and that’ll sure be worth more than the incremental fuel economy, is what I think.

I had two sets of these on the 2010 MDX-Tech I recently sold to get into my 2023 MDX-S. This is a fantastic tire. I don’t remember the exact size but I think I went +20mm wider and changed profile from 55 to 50. Great tires. Will consider Pirelli Scorpions again for my MDX-S.
