Hello everyone,
I need some guidance on the A4 service costs. I have a 2011 ADV with 95k miles. I bought it early 2019 with 85k miles. No issues other than the oil so far. I am having the oil consumption warranty work done, and tried to get the A4 service done as well. The previous customer service folks I worked with at the dealer said it would be cheap to do timing belt.

When I dropped off yesterday a new tech (previous ones don't work there anymore) tried to charge me full price $1,800 for the A4 service. I had to explain to him multiple times that the warranty labor should eat into the cost, and he eventually said $900. I said no additional work because I felt like he wasn't trustworthy or knowledgeable.

Last night I did more searching and found a coupon on the dealer site for timing belt at $499. I sent this and asked for a new quote for th A4.

Dealer got back this morning and said $1,252, and suggested an oil change.

At this point I really don't trust the tech, and told him as much. I plan on having the work done later at an independent shop.

I'm having trouble finding price information on the A4. I thought it was around 800-1000 on another thread, but couldn't find it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I eventually got them to 860 total including timing belt, drive belt, tensioner, and water pump.
Are we allowed to name these dealerships on the forum? It's about time the bad ones get named. The good ones deserve some praise too. Im sick of their lying all the time. I wouldnt trust your tech to be honest, probably wont do a damn thing and charge you anyway. what are the odds....

I'm in the Washington DC area. I haven't been impressed by the few dealerships I've worked with so far.

Once they got it on the lift they said the oil pump is leaking, and want another 800. Currently solidly in my top 5 worst service experiences, but gunning for #1!

Wow, so they are saying that they will spend extra 7-8 hours undoing the oil pan and the oil pump, replacing the gasket and putting them back on before getting the new TB in? That's a nice scam they got going.

I kinda feel that you bargained too hard in the 1st place. Normally TB job w/o spark plugs and with a coupon in my neighborhood (SF Bay Area) is around $1100. The best deal I have ever seen is about $1000 that does not include everything (include tensioner, water pump, belt and tensioner pulley etc.) Once you zeroed in on the one with the lowest bid and unbelievably low quote, you should know that you are walking toward a trap. Had you used one that quoted you $1100 with a coupon upfront, I expect the whole experience would actually be more pleasant.

Coupon was 499 for timing belt only. The reduced cost is because they're already doing the oil consumption recall, so it reduces the labor hours dramatically. I don't think they gave me a discount, just didn't overcharge for labor they weren't doing.

I appreciate questioning the op, and it makes sense, but this is the poorest communication I've had. I hoped the forum could give me some gauge of the costs others were paying, either at a dealership or independent.

You are asking a quote in a very special situation. As I said, typically timing belt is $1100.

Roger. Thanks for letting me know. I'm just hoping the tech is better than the service advisor.

An Acura dealership in Canada quotes CAD $1400 for the TB change parts and labour included. That's about USD $1100 (tax not included, and we pay 13% HST here on top of almost everything).

I ended up at ~$1500 for timing belt, water pump, oil pump, drive belt, tensioner. This was cheaper due to the oil consumption recall.

I plan on doing the spark plugs myself.

Just to follow up mdx is running great after recall work. I get about 18.2~18.5 mpg now, up from 16.3.

If your doing the oil consumption warranty, it drops the labour to half since it’s already open when doing it. Also timing belt is suppose to be done for free during oil consumption warranty in Canada along with valve adjustments. You will have to pay for serpatine belt and tensioner.
