I did a search and couldn't find any information on the topic. My 2001 is still running problem free, but if something were to happen I would like to know all the possible options. Could the 03 transmission be compatible with a 01/02 or would the ECU be confused from the different gear ratios. If the 03 transmission is an improvement over the 01/02 this would be my replacement of choice.
While on the topic, has anyone with a 01/02 needed a transmission replacement for purposes other then a leak? Has anyone had a true transmission break-down where they were unable to get out of first or second?

The case is different lenght...

..you'd need to switch quite a bit more than JUST the tranny. You' d need the tail shafts, supports, brackets & bits. Really not feasible, especailly considering the 03 ECU is drive-by-wire and definately incompatible.

There have been folks with actually failed trannys -- I recall at least did report a "stuck in 2nd" type problem,
