I found this article interesting, but then wondered how often this sort of thing happens? Doing last minute fixes in a hangar on the way to the dealer. I guess it's good they caught it EVENTUALLY, but still..........

Avoiding a potentially embarrassing recall, Ford Motor Co. quietly fixes defects on '03 Ford Expedition SUVs before releasing them to dealers.

About 2,000 early production models reportedly had poor welds in the rear suspension area. Dana Corp., maker of the Expedition frame, worked with an independent contractor in a hangar of the Willow Run, MI, airport to re-weld faulty spots.

Sure. It was found in the 08/01/2002 issue of Ward's Auto World
Page 20.

My new job includes monitoring automobile quality initiatives and I subscribe to a dow jones news service to keep up. I was sent that article through that method.
