I haven't visited this site in quite a while, and spent some time looking for info on the 2001-2002 MDX Nav update. I didn't find anything current, so I figured I'd call Acura TLC.

Anyway, long story short, minor upgrade coming out in March, and full update coming out 'in the fall'.

I asked him what's up with that -- I had expected annual updates, and it is pretty unnerving when I get my Acura magazine and it brags about all of the cool 2003 mdx stuff like HP and VSA, and a navigation system that is 3x faster with twice as many points of interest.

In any case, I feel that the promise that the nav would be continually upgraded has not been fulfilled.....

Hi Davegood:

___This is the one area where Acura is really falling flat on its @$$ … Anyone one of us can purchase the exact same Navtech maps for a Pocket PC or Laptop but these maps would only be 3 – 6 months old and the PocketPC map packages can be purchased for just $100 - $200 including the maps! POI’s are less but that is a Navtech based purchase as well. Acura is already 2 years out on the 01’s and it sounds like they did not get the latest map updates even for the 03’s? How is this situation going to play out in 3 – 5 years? How about 10? I believe now that more are purchasing the Touring w/ NAVI, Acura will begin to hear the criticism and will begin updating on a more frequent basis to keep this frustration out of the forums/press/TV etc. If they are planning a Fall 03 update for the 01/02 owners, I don’t really consider that to be customer service given an almost 3 year lag time for the first NAVI purchasers but than again, I didn’t order a NAVI equipped X although would have liked too given the built in, feature rich, and custom feel ;)

yup

Yup -- I agree completely -- for the 2001 owners, this is an unacceptable amount of time.

It really sucks because they push the 2003 nav with 'twice the number (7 million) points of interest....

I'll add my 2 cents here, too...our new '03 Dodge Ram now has a NAV system from Mopar (Alpine) with many more routes, updates, POI's, with a coupon for an update DVD in 6 months, and satellite radio. Acura, you have been embarrassed by DiamlerChrysler in a pickup truck!

Was at dealership today to sort out a billing problem and asked about the update DVD. The service Manager told me it is out already. He said it has been available for 2 weeks now but that all it has is updates in POI's. He hasn't heard of any other updates available this year. I asked if he believes they will ever update the 01/02 Nav DVD's to "catch" up to the info on the 03. He said he believes they will but not for at least a year. Hmmm. That's all the info I could scrape up on this visit to the dealership. Won't be going back to that one again so will see what the next dealership will have to say at next oil change.

I'm beginning to think getting a real updated disk for the '01/'02 is like your avatar. Constantly running after something, but never catching it.:p Hope I'm wrong!

not optimistic

Somehow, I'm not optimistic. I wonder if the April version actually has any new coverage or functionality.

I still feel like we go sent out to pasture on this one......

ridiculous

What a bunch of   :3: :3: :3: :( :( :3: :3: :3:

I guess they figure that the buyers of 2000-03 CL, TL, RL and 2001-02 MDX do not represent many people??

I would think that there would be enough buyers to justify this. Whatever. I definitely feel cheated as the availability of these updates were stated throughout all Acura literature. Not that they will, but they should be free at this point.

FALL -- and no promise that won't slip either......

Sending us the bedbug letter

Agreed, my response to Acura is emphatically negative. I would urge all '01-'02 owners to send e-mail and/or call about this. I specifically stated that "If Acura is unable to update the maps for the Navigation system sold with my vehicle, Acura should consider replacing that system with one that Acura *CAN* update."

Fat lot of good it'll do any of us. Clearly I should be resigned to having *waaayyy* out of date POIs forever.

I was fed the "assurance" line when I purchased but came to realize that the coverage we have is the coverage we will always have. Although it is really quite good. I would hope that if area coverage isn't going to be expanded that a new DVD with completely reorganized and up to date POI's will be offered.

Faster Recalc

More than the additional routes and POIs, I was really hoping that the improvements to the recalc speed would be applied to pre 03 models.

Mine calcs initial routes pretty quickly, but recalc can take forever some times. Acura claims that the 03 is like 4x fast than 02, which is probably a good selling point for the 03 nav, but just salt in the wound to the pre-03 owners.

Is seriously think we should. Can someone write a letter that we can c&p to send to Acura and post on other boards with re: to Acura cars with NAVI?

HEY, hello -- BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY -- Tim???

OK, I'll make this short -

There are probably TEN of THOUSANDS of Acura owners who are potential customers for the up to date DVD.

I'll bet there are enough software folks on this forum ALONE to justify a BUSINESS.

Tim, thing the market is there for "freindly competition" to the factory's weak effort??

I think it will be more effective if folks use their own words rather than a boilerplate. I think if you hit the highlights in a polite but firm manner, we'll have the best chance for success:

1) Annual updates were/are promised to buyers.
2) The last update was 9/2001.
3) The "current" update availability date has repeatedly slipped out.
4) As an owner I am NOT happy about this situation, and it will affect my choice of future vehicles.
5) I would like Acura to rectify the situation by....

My thoughts on #5 are a) give me/us a new system b) commit to a hard date for update and provide it free c) ????
