I've been racking my head trying to resolve an issue I'm having with my MDX. Here's the specs:

2001 MDX
200k+ miles
Recent rebuilt tranny
new timing belt, water pump
new shift sensors (previous thread)
New air filter
checked plugs, they are clean and fairly new (20k)
ran a seafoam treatment, and have been using Chevron 93 for past few months.
Checked for loose connections, listened for vacuum hiss and physically inspected lines.
Cleaned EGR passages when fuel economy started dropping a few months back - checked them again and they are clean as they were when I re-assembled everything.


Symptoms: Accelerating from a stop, sluggish performance, engine stalls sometimes like its getting improper fuel/air ratio. Accelerating while driving yields same results. Seems to effect mid - high throttle only as idle is OK. around 900rpm and smooth. This started as a once in a while symptom, but has gotten worse to the point where it does this on almost every trip. When engine is cold, it seems to have much more power, but once I've gotten up to operating temp, the symptoms start and may vary depending on outside temp.

What I mean by loss of power - as in over half the power is lost - maybe 45%, unable to get over 45mph in worst case scenario. Other times its just a sluggish acceleration able to get up to 55mph.

MPG has decreased since symptoms started, from 15-17 to 10-12.

No MIL/CEL and no codes stored.

I am posting scan results from a typical stop-acceleration moment. From what I have read about o2 sensors, they usually return a voltage value between .1 - .9 volts, while this scan shows values as high as 1.2 - I am not sure if the MDX keeps to this typical specification as these numbers are for o2 sensors in general.


I've attached the .txt results of what my odb scanner calls "record live data" mode where it records all present values in frames for a set period of time. This scan has about 60 frames of data that took about 1 frame per second, all separated by dashes (---) between each recorded page. I didn't want to post the whole text file due to its length, perhaps I will add the text to a second post.

It would be very interesting to see how Bank 2 is faring at the same time. It does look like sensor 2 (the post-cat sensor) seems to be "following" the pre-cat sensor, which can indicate a cat that's not performing correctly. I too would suspect a clogged muffler / cat based on the symptoms. I was going to write up a lengthy description of how to do this with a (cheap!) infrared thermometer, but I found a really good writeup on the process here: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-a-catalytic-converter

I'd do what they suggest, including potentially loosening the exhaust and/or removing the post-cat O2 sensor to see if the performance comes back (or not)...
